Guest guest
My son was exclusively breast-fed until about 6 months, and initially did well with all the fruits and veggies and cereals we gave him. Now, he does not seem to want to be fed purees by us on a spoon anymore--understandably, since he is over a year, has some teeth, and eats some solid food. He loves to grab his favorite foods in his hands and put them in his mouth. However, he is pretty picky about what he'll pick up. He loves shredded cheese, blueberries, banana slices, crackers, raisins, sometimes cut-up Tofurky slices, and that's about it. He's still willing to be fed his oatmeal in the morning and his yogurt for his afternoon snack. I wish he would pick up beans, peas, carrot slices, tofu but no go. Even if I wasn't going to insist on him eating his veggies, I can hardly consider cheese, crackers and raisins meals. The doctor said we should be feeding him whatever we eat, which is great in theory. But, for example, last night we had burritos for dinner. He would not eat the rice, the avocado, the olives, and I didn't try him on the salsa. So we were back to just cheese. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. -Sarah " Desire the well-being of your fellow creature, eyeing his good fortune benevolently. Guest guest
If you mix beans in with shredded cheese??? Lily likes things to dip. She wants to eat dip at every meal....sometimes eating only dip! LOL Zuchinni sticks, shredded carrots, garden burger cut into wedges, pita chips, baked beans, shredded lettuce (Lily won't eat that, but I keep trying) I also got us addicted to " Veggie Booty " Kinda salty, but includes some veggies in it, like a popcorn. Soynut butter and Sunbutter are 2 staples in our house as well. Best of luck to you. Let us know what works, Cassie " Sarah E. Guest guest
Let him have the spoon. I'm sure that between fingers and the spoon he'll get enough nutrition. I thought that my daughter was the only toddler who refused avocado - now she eats them almost every day. Keep offering new foods - it may take up to 10 tries before they get eaten. Try veggies with dips (kids love to dip!) - lightly steamed brocolli; carrots, lettuces, etc. You can do the same with cut fruit and yoghurt - toddlers love kiwi and most berries. When my (then toddler, now almost 13 year old) daughter refused all fruits and vegetables, the doctor suggested frozen; for several weeks she ate little more than frozen peas, frozen blueberries, frozen corn. Maybe some whole wheat pasta dunked in sauce and the occasional cheese stick (string cheese). Don't sweat it! By the time your son goes to college he'll be potty trained, sleeping in his own bed, and eating a well-rounded diet. Robin " Sarah E. Guest guest
I am so glad this topic came up. I am in the same boat and have finally realized that my toddler will eat when he is hungry enough. I broke down and gave him mac and cheese last night and I could not believe how fast he shoveled it into his mouth! He has been going though his stages of eating only one particular item and nothing else, so for a while I have been giving him what I know he will eat, but it is getting stressful. I hate making food for him and food for us, but like one of the other posts said, he will eat when he is hungry after seeing it so many times. I just feel so bad! Then, if he is crying my husband breaks down and gives him junk, even if I ask him not to! Ugh!! It is just so different, when my oldest was this age he ate EVERYTHING, so this is a new experience for me. Thanks !! Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Mobile. Try it now. Guest guest
I'm not sure if this will help, but in our house if you don't like what's for dinner, you get to make yourself toast and cashew butter. Throw some frozen peas in the mac and cheese, and use whole wheat pasta. Some toddlers never eat a meal, just graze through the day; these toddlers still need to learn that dinnertime is family time, and they need to sit at the table (and have a little taste of everything on their plates). Mostly, relax. S & T <itshotinjt04 wrote: I am so glad this topic came up. I am in the same boat and have finally realized that my toddler will eat when he is hungry enough. Guest guest
I understand how you feel, my son is 15 mos. and getting quite picky himself. For a long time though he would be happy to be fed as long as he had his own spoon to try to eat with, so give him a spoon if you havn't. Now he is really good at eating by himself already. But I do try to give him the same foods we eat, it helps if he sees us eating the same thing. he ALWAYS wants whatever we have. But his favorite thing now is berries and olives. some days that is all he wants, I have to hide them or he will not eat the other food! lol , " Sarah E.
