Guest guest
Just found out that drapes may have formeldehyde (sp?) and chemicals to stop shrinkage. I would like to buy some curtains for our upcoming baby. Do you have any suggestions? I found some websites that have organic curtains but they are super expensive. Was going to go to Pottery Barn Kids and get some (as they have a nice dark lining)... also, have you heard anything about lead in the cheap blinds? Should that be a concern for off-gasing or just if your child chews on the blinds? Thanks for your help! On Behalf Of chandelle' Sunday, May 18, 2008 9:51 AM Re: Re: [) training pants fascinating! i had no idea that allergies could cause bed-wetting. the idea of planting subliminal cues in a child's brain is also very interesting! i've never heard of that before. we're big " kohn-heads " in our family - fanatics of alfie kohn's work - so avoiding reward/punishment systems is very important to us. i feel very grateful that i found his work early on, because my son is one of those strong-willed types that missie mentioned. we went into the whole thing with this somewhat inexperienced, naive belief that if we let him, he would choose to use the potty on his own without requiring bribery or condemnation. so we went with that and essentially, luckily, we were right. the first time he ever used the potty was on his own, he developed the skills on his own, he decided to use the potty out of the house on his own - every step of the way he guided, he made the decisions, which was what we really wanted. ultimately he started to grow out of his diapers (we use cloth) and we were SO not buying more. so we started being more aggressive with the training, like asking him to go, and i showed irritation sometimes when i'd open a dirty diaper, and in response, he completely dug in his heels and refused to progress - in fact, he even REgressed a bit. so we gave up and allowed him to go his own way again and less than a month later he was completely out of diapers. if we'd followed all the standard advice of " training " i don't know where we'd be, but i have no doubt he'd still be in diapers, and probably for a long time until we pulled our heads out, so to speak, and started responding to his needs and personality. it is so important that we respond to our children as individuals and not as a page out of a book. chandelle
Guest guest
I would check local thrift shops; chances are any toxins will have been alread washed out. Guest guest
Hi Karen, Ah, ancient family (not so much of a) secret. We get flat sheets, a nice organic one would be lovely for the baby's room, and just run the curtain rod through the large hem at the top of the sheet - sometimes it's not even sewed closed at the sides, and you have to do nothing more than stick the rod through - sometimes you have to snip the seam open. You can also sew, or use that iron-on tape stuff to attach, a backing to make it more light-blocking - like maybe an organic flannel sheet? You can also take a strip off the bottom of a sheet to make tab-top curtains this way (if you're handy with sewing or ironing on that tape stuff, like I prefer) :-) - and for shorter windows, you can take a wider strip off and make matching throw pillows, curtan tie backs, whatever. You can also use matching pillow cases for bassinet mattress sheets or changing table pad covers. Have fun and happy nesting! :-) Lorraine On Behalf Of Karen S Miller Sunday, May 18, 2008 8:34 AM drapery and blinds Just found out that drapes may have formeldehyde (sp?) and chemicals to stop shrinkage. Guest guest
We bought wooden blinds for our last house and really liked them since curtains trap all sorts of dust and stuff in them and the wooden blinds we could just vacuum and wipe down...they were great, but expensive and I miss them. If I were to go with curtains, I would make sure to get machine washable ones if you can find them or find someone local who might be able to make them. We now own a 100 year old house now and haven't been able to afford to update the window treatments yet, but I have a friend who has offered to sew curtains for us out of organic cotton or hemp. Anyway, we had the entire house tested for lead paint and I talked to the guy who did the analysis and he said that unless your kids are chewing on the blinds (which ours never have) that is not a health issue. I don't think I'd go for metal or plastic blinds myself...maybe bamboo or something like that. Good luck in your search and I'd love to hear what you end up buying! Guest guest
Crazed getting ready for the baby so do not have time to make curtains.. but thanks for all the great suggestions. I just purchased some Eco Curtains from Crate and Barrel.. made from just bamboo and cotton.. and they note there's no formeldehyde. Pricy but hopefully will look nice and will last forever.
