Guest guest
This is interesting. I have three sons, ages about 7, 5 and 2, and they are all tall and skinny. All active and bright. I notice the same thing -- lots of the girls in their classes are rail-thin, and a few of the other boys are slim, but most are quite husky. I feel this pressure myself, thinking I don't want my boys to be " scrawny " -- as a society we seem to value boys who are " beefy " . I hope my boys remain committed vegetarians (we are actually vegan, but my older two will happily eat cheese and eggs away from home) when they are teens -- being thinner as well as possibly experiencing a later onset of puberty may have them resenting our diet at some point! Guest guest
FYI, I have two boys, vegetarian since birth (but not vegan). My older one was husky until about age 13, now he is 14 and thin. My younger is 10 and husky. I have a non vegetarian coworker who's kids are super SUPER skinny and is constantly concerned about them being finicky and /or trying to get them to put weight on. All I'm saying is, nutrition is certainly part of this but veg vs. meat eating isn't relevant and I think genetics has a great deal more to do with it. If my kids were the super skinny ones, I'd be worried it was the veg diet and outsiders would certainly blame the veg diet, but since my cooworkers kids eat meat no one is blaming the diet! Guest guest
I agree. I ate meat, dairy, and candy heavily as a teenager and as a young adult and people still teased me for looking like a " stick! " Since I've gone vegan, I'm just a healthier " stick! Guest guest
When people comment on my boys being light I point out that their dad and his brother were both rails right up until adulthood, and they were raised in a home where they ate a traditional meat-and-potatoes diet plus lots of junk food and had a freezer always stocked full of ice cream, which they ate from large cereal bowls. I don't know what I would have to do to make my boys get " beefier " . I on the other hand was always overweight with lousy skin and now stay nice and slim without counting calories.
