Vegan diets and children

Most parents who want to feed their children a diet free of animal products

are usually MUCH more aware of their children's nutritional needs than omni

parents. I agree with several other posters--arrest parents of obese children,

or parents of children with diabetes (type 1 is strongly linked to dairy

consumption).

The MAJORITY of children throughout the world get diets with little to no

meat in them. It is only in " civilized " nations that meat and dairy are

pushed--and the children in these countries are much more prone to chronic

illness

than the children who are mostly fed vegetarian diets. Statistics bear this

out, as we all know.

I'm not even sure why we all obsess about our kids' diets, as with very

little effort, our kids are very well fed, without the use of animal products.

It's the omni parents who need to worry, but mainstream sources of information

will never mention that fact!

The parents who feed (or don't feed) their kids, to the point of illness or

starvation, are the same ones who would do that on ANY diet, I think. Veganism

is just coincidentally their way of eating. It is really, really difficult

to get a child to that point. You really need to work at it, and be totally

oblivious to your child's deteriorating condition. That's NOT NORMAL, veg or

not!

Plus, in this case that was mentioned, this Scottish child was in very

severe condition. It could very well be that the child has a genetic problem, as

one other poster pointed out. This needs to be medically investigated before

any more mainstream alarmists scream about the vegan diet being inadequate.

That's just irresponsible journalism, IMO. Marilyn
