Guest guest
Fish is flesh. & nbsp; There are people who call themselves pescatarians; they eat fish, but not mammals or birds. --- On Wed, 6/11/08, Lebasi & lt;lebasi.klotko & gt; wrote: Lebasi & lt;lebasi.klotko & gt; Re: pardon my ignorant question Wednesday, June 11, 2008, 5:54 PM Is fish meat? Guest guest
Hi Lebasi, Well, we refer to any animal carcass used for food as meat - or we call it by the animal's name. For example, if our son asks what kind of meat that is - we don't say beef or bacon or seafood, we say cow or pig or fishie. And I think I've heard people refer to dead fish being cut for cooking in ways like " cut the fish meat off the bone " - so technically, the flesh is probably considered the meat of the fish. But you know, the other day, our son won some candy in a pinball machine kind of thing and it had gelatin and I told him it had meat in it, and he was fine with just trying again to win a lollipop and the " meat " candy disappeared. So, we really use " meat " as an umbrella term for anything non-vegetarian. Good luck! I find the kid questions are just the toughest - on all topics, not just vegetarianism!! :-) Lorraine On Behalf Of Lebasi Wednesday, June 11, 2008 3:55 PM Re: pardon my ignorant question Is fish meat? Guest guest
We say for gelatin that " no it doesn't have meat in it but we don't eat bones either. Guest guest
I would think so, as fish are technically animals that live and feel pain. & nbsp; Some people think that they aren't (like people practicing Lent), but as a vegetarian, I would say that they are. Guest guest
You are learning, and aren't we all learning every day? so there are no ignorant questions. As some others have said, we make it very simple that anything in the animal kingdom is meat (bugs, fish, mollusks, cows, chickens, humans, etc.) and we do not eat it. I have not had to explain this to my son yet - he is 15 mos old, but I have had to explain this to family members who try to find things for us to eat. My aunt thought it was okay to use sausage or ham, or beef broth to flavor things since we don't have to eat the meat - we can pick the vegetables out of the stew and not eat that part. My brother thought that shellfish like scallops or mussels would be okay because they don't have a face and are " just tissue. " The route we have gone instead of saying what we won't eat is saying what we will eat which is any vegetable or fruit, any seed or nut, and any grain. People understand these categories and no one tries to say that a scallop is a vegetable. We also acknowledge that other people choose to eat some of these things and that a label is not as important as the effort made to eat a diet that is so much better for the body, the planet, and the animals. Someone who chooses not to eat beef anymore but still keeps some fish in their diet is making a impact. With people who suggest we pick things out of animal based dishes, I have gone to an extreme with but it works. I have asked them to replace the animal product with cigarette ashes in the sentence. If you would ask me to just pick the green beans out of the cigarette ashes and think that is reasonable, then you can ask me the same about the animal ingredient (including dairy or eggs for us since we are vegan). Like I said it is extreme, but since then my aunt has understood and does not ask us to pick things out of a meal anymore. Granted, I also make sure I always bring a dish that everyone can eat, but I am no longer having to explain why beef broth is still animal based. Not sure if that helps, but hope it gives you another perspective. Susan > > > On > Behalf Of Lebasi > Wednesday, June 11, 2008 3:55 PM > > Re: pardon my ignorant question > > Is fish meat? Guest guest
What we tell our family and friends when they're cooking for us and want specifics is that if it runs or hides when we go after it, then we don't eat it! That seems to clear up some of the confusion. :-) ...k
