What can I feed 9 month old raw vegan baby?

The other day my baby got a rash around her mouth and has bumps on her back from

teething too long on a green apple. She loves fruit and I guess we have

overdone it. I am

trying to get more vegetables into her but aside from the occasional sip of

veggie juice (we

have centrifugal juicer -- not great for greens) and teething on broccoli,

carrots and celery

stalks she is just not eating much of them. We are saving up to invest in a

better juicer

(green power or omega) but until them I am stuck with a cuisinart, blender, and

grater to

help me make baby food.

Today I put sunflower sprouts in the cuisinart so she could chew them through

her feeder

(mesh bag with handle like a rattle). She had a bit of purple cabbage that way

earlier --

sucked on it a bit.

Does anyone know the proportions of a baby's diet that should be devoted to

veggies,

fruit, seeds, nuts? I find recipes for raw food but not this sort of

information. I want to

limit her fruit intake for awhile but worry she is not eating enough.

I love that she is so healthy -- rarely has had a cold, only sick once in her

life but she

seems thinner than other babies and is still nursing a lot at night.

Tanks for any help,

Mama Martha and baby mina

From 4-11 months, my daughter was still nursing 2-3 times throughout the night.

I was happy to know that she was hungry and growing. I wish I had as great a

start in life as my daughter has had.

Don't make too many comparisons, or you will drive yourself nuts. Feel

comfortable with your decisions. The continued nursing, raw vegan lifestyle is

amazing to provide fie a child.

We feed our 15 mos vegan (about %75% raw) DS a lot of avocado for the

healthy fats. He too is very thin compared to other babies, but I

really think he is just right size for him. He is just now 19 lbs,

but he has the cute baby fluffy rolls, and he is reaching

developmental milestones, so I no longer worry about the weight.

Some other things I make for him:

Nut fruit smoothies - I know in raw you are not supposed to mix nuts

and fruits, but I make a " milk " shake for him with either cherries,

strawberries or blueberries, and raw cashew milk. I have also made

this with hemp seeds, and macadamia nuts instead of cashews.

Green Smoothies (for the iron and calcium) He won't drink more than 4

oz of this at a sitting, but that is about all he can eat of anything

at once - I use as a base 1/2 banana and a handful of baby spinach,

or a handful of beet greens, or a leaf of kale, then add whatever

fruit I have on hand. He prefers berries to the other fruits.

Red Smoothies - I tried this for me about 3 months ago and now I

think this is my son's favorite meal. This recipe is enough for the

both of us - 1 beet (peeled), 2 medjool dates that have been soaking

for about 2 hours (don't forget to pit them), about 8 - 10 oz red

fruit (raspberries, strawberries or cherries are our favorites). Mix

it all in the blender - I typically freeze the fruit so it is a nice

cold treat for our extreme Florida heat, and I also add the date soak

water until I get the texture I want. If I don't freee the fruit,

then I don't use the date soak water because it is way too thin for

me.

Raw coleslaw - purple cabbage, carrots, and raw tahini based dressing

(I don't have a real recipe for the dressing, I just mix raw tahini,

some raw ACV, and whatever fresh herbs I have from the garden - then

add water to thin to the right consistency.)

" Creamy " Tomato Soup - my son loves tomatoes, so I mainly just give

him chunks of tomato, but he also loves this soup -

put in a blender 1 large tomato, 1 sun dried tomato, 3 basil leaves,

and either 1 tbls of tahini, or half an avocado

He also loves Larabars - I pick of pieces that have smaller pieces of

nuts and don't let him eat the parts where there are big chunks of

nut - sometimes I find a quarter of an almond in them and that is

just too big for my comfort.

I think my son has an issue with texture because he really like mushy

things, smoothies or pureees - he would prefer not to bite into

something like an apple piece, but if I shredd it, or throw it in a

blender to make it mushy he eats it.

HTH - let us know what works for you too - it's hard to find other

mommies feeding their babes a predominately or 100% raw diet so it is

always good to share.

I would also love to know some ways moms are getting veggies into

their little ones. Any ideas would be appreciated! Here are some

things he loves so far...(not all are raw)...

- " milk " shakes - soy or rice " ice cream " , one banana, and hemp milk (or

other dairy substitute) all in blender.

-granola of any kind

-pizza w/no cheese, only sauce and diced veggies (he'll even eat

artichoke on a pizza!)

-rice and beans

-sweet potato or white potato

-soy chicken nuggets/patties

....and that's where we are right now...need more veggie ideas!!!

Our 3 yr. old seems pretty thin also (30 lbs. and tall) but it does

not bother me because what's " ideal " or " healthy " for most people is a

chunky or full baby...not exactly my idea of healthy.

By two, my daughter would eat just about any vegetable (raw or cooked) dipped in

hommous.  My sister used to complain that Alyssa had garlic breath instead of

sweet baby breath.

Hi there, I'm brand new to this group. How wonderful to see a raw

vegan baby thread. I am raising my one year old raw (for now) My

husband is 100% raw vegan and I am about 75% with stints here and

there 100% raw.

I highly recommend getting as much greens into baby's diet as possible

and not getting them too used to sweet fruit constantly. It may not be

a huge problem right away, but in the long run they could have

problems with their teeth and hair.

A couple we are friendly with have two raw children. The 3 1/2 year

old girl will sit down to a plate of kale and just munch away! Its so

amazing to watch. They treat fruit like more of a treat than the main

portion of their diet. I'd guess that greens & vegetables are probably

50% of the diet. Fats 25% and Fruit 25%.

My son is 1 y.o. Here is our favorite way to get him to eat his veggies:

Blended salad

1/2 avocado, blended with juice 1 lemon

add 1 cucumber peeled

1 celery stalk

1/4 lb. baby greens (spinach, salad mix)

something red or orange (on tomato, bell pepper, carrot)

Blend!

Hello,

We are also raising our children vegan. I have a 9, 7 and 1 year

old. My older kids are getting the hang of it. We have only been

vegan for about 6 months. My one year old refuses to eat anything

really. All he wants to do is nurse all day and all night. I try

bananas, avacado, hummos, etc. He does like smoothies and cooked

spinach. He also likes soy yogurt. He is not consistent and really

nurses all night long which is very tiring on me and him.

Anyway, we follow the Disease-Proof you child book written by Dr.

Fuhrman. He has great receipes and talks about how much is needed

for a healthy diet. He also has a website that has great information

as well called Disease proof.com. This has been helpful for my

older children.

Glad to have other ideas for feeding a one year old as well. Any

tips for getting him to eat and not nurse so much is great. I am

just glad he is getting something since he is bulky and big.

thanks.

My 15 mos old goes to school during the day and eats food there -

still purees and smoothies mainly, but food. He nurses all night

too, but I really don't mind. We co-sleep so I am able to lay on my

side and sleep while he nurses. I don't know if that works for you

or not, but I do understand it being tiring on you. I read an

article recently that said babies who are breastfed past 12 mos tend

to not be interested in food much until 24 mos or older. All I can

say is hang in there and know that by nursing your baby, you are

already giving him the best food possible.

Can you tell me what kind of chicken nuggets you buy? We tried the

Veggie Patch ones and loved them, but then realized they had egg

whites in them! The next time I went to the store I looked at all

the boxes and they all had something in them that was non-vegan.

We have actually been moving to more whole foods and less processed soy

items, however when my five year old can't stand it anymore and wants a fun

treat meal I do recommend the Health is wealth chicken free nuggets. They

are available at whole foods and even advertise them as vegan on the box.

It indicates they are meatless stone ground whole wheat breaded nuggets.

They do contain soy protein isolate which I try to avoid but do break down

and purchase occasionally and are an option if you want vegan nuggets.

Link to their vegan products page is attached:

Have they changed their recipe and are now vegan? Last time we

checked any Morningstar farms products, they all had egg or dairy in

them. I would love to find a vegan corn dog for certain occassions.

No, they contain egg whites. Some of Morningstar's products are vegan, you just

have to check the ingredient list.

Yikes!!! I thought I had read the label on everything in our kitchen,

but aparently not! You're right...the kind of chicken nuggets/patties

we buy (Boca brand) contain egg whites. I've looked at the

Morningstar brand stuff but am not happy with all the additives and

preservatives they include. I have to go to Whole Foods tomorrow for

some groceries so I'll do some deeper looking there on the soy chicken

nugget issue.

On the vegan lunchbox they have a recipe for vegan corndogs.  I have sucessfully

made this.  I even have frozen them for later.  Pretty good, but a little

crumbly.  There is also a recipe

http://vegandad.blogspot.com/2008/02/pretzel-bites.html for pretzel dogs at the

vegan dad site.  Still haven't found any to buy.

Re: What can I feed 9 month old raw vegan baby?

Have they changed their recipe and are now vegan? Last time we

checked any Morningstar farms products, they all had egg or dairy in

them. I would love to find a vegan corn dog for certain occassions.

Can you tell me what kind of chicken nuggets you buy? We tried the

Veggie Patch ones and loved them, but then realized they had egg

whites in them! The next time I went to the store I looked at all

the boxes and they all had something in them that was non-vegan.

That article is funny. My son nursed until he was 22 mo's and he would

not let us give him anything mushy like baby food since he was maybe

11mo's old - He loved sandwiches and stuff like that - I'd still cut

them up bite sized, but he wouldn't even touch applesauce until he was

maybe 15mo's old, I think. LOL. It wasn't too tricky, as we made about

all of our 'baby food' - froze it in ice cube trays and transferred

them to zip top freezer bags. :) We were actually surprised that that

stage didn't last as long as we thought it did.

Anecdotally - a friend of mine's daughter had allergies to peanuts,

dairy and kiwi and a few other things (some she's since grew out of,

some she hasn't) - and she mostly nursed, and barely ate any baby food

(also preferred the mushy kind to finger types of foods) - she much

preferred nursing until she was about a year old.I had at some point

when I was nursing read something aabout children who had some food

allergies preferring to nurse longer, and to forgo solids - but I

can't recall anything more about it than that, and my anecdote about

my friend's child. My son only had/has a milk protein allergy, he

started himself on solids at 4mo's (I was eating a banana, he grabbed

a handful of it and chewed it and swallowed it before we knew what

happened and was back for more. :) I never wanted to start that early

with solids - but he was very interested (and he was able to sit up on

his own at that age as well). So, it progressed pretty fast from mush

to finger foods to sandwiches by a year old - and this was all based

on what he wanted, we never pushed, or whatever - we were cautious and

we talked to our doc all the time about it as well.

Nothing much to add - I just wanted to add my anecdote - the mention

of this article made me chuckle, because it was not our case at all.

LOL.
