Ideas on getting omega-3 into a toddler?

Hi,

I'd love advice for getting omega-3 supplements into my vegan 2-year-old.

Recently our family switched from commercial soymilk with added omega-3/ DHA to

homemade soymilk, so this is a new issue for us.

I take Omega-Zen-3 (a seaweed formula) and contacted the vitamin company about a

toddler dose, but even though I know how much my daughter should be taking, I

can't convince her to drink supplemented water, soymilk, or even chocolaty

smoothies -- she doesn't like the taste. She will sometimes have flax on her

breakfast cereal or in a smoothie, but I want to make sure it's enough.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

We just switched from hemp oil (which my duaghter hated but took because her

doctor told her to) and are now using the little critter's gummy fish that

someone here recommended.  They don't taste the best in the world but are an

improvement over hemp oil that was an improvement over flax oil.  My daughter is

at least old enough to understand that she needs it.  And that the doctor said

she needs it (so it has even more authority than coming from me).  But at 2 - I

don't know what i'd do.  Lexie didn't take supplements at all at that age.

i put flax, coconut or hemp oil in many things that my kids eat. the best

way for us is smoothies; we can't even taste it there. i also often put it

in their vegan yogurt, which is one of their favorite snacks: plain yogurt,

frozen blueberries, agave or honey and hemp or flax oil. it blends in

pretty well with the yogurt. i also often serve them quinoa or brown rice

with one of the oils along with some nutritional yeast; that's another

favorite snack for them. we also use spirulina in smoothies and snacks like

these <http://notyucky.blogspot.com/2008/05/date-nut-balls.html>. it's not

great in smoothies except in small quantities but it adds an interesting

savory-ness to nut-based snacks.

I give my toddler LSA powder on his porridge. I give him a tablespoon

full most mornings. Im not sure if thats enough either. LSA is

linseed, sunflower and Almond meal. It is hardly noticable in the

porridge, esp if there are a few sultanas in there. I really am not

sure what else to use.

I make the flaxjacks recipe in Vegan Sourcebook. But I bet you could

just add a tablespoon of ground flaxseed (which you can purchase

already ground for convenience at most bigbox grocery stores) in

whatever pancake recipe you use... or probably any bread-like goods

you make?

I put ground flax in the baked beans yesterday. It gave them a thicker

consistency, and my daughter (who I was thinking of when I made it) and I really

liked them.
