Guest guest
This isn't a parenting question per se.... I have a small yard in the back, mostly paved. We're renters, so all my beautiful flowers are in containers. Some snails have gotten over the fence and into some containers, not others. Half of my impatiens have been completely eaten! I am looking for a way to get rid of the snails without poison or torture. I have a toddler who likes to touch everything, so poison is definitely out even if I didn't object to killing things. People have suggested salt, but it burns the little boogers to death. Is there anything I can do to *discourage* them? Thanks, Sarah P.S. For those asking about unique names, our son is Neriya (rhymes with area), which means God is my Light!
Guest guest
Sarah, Copper. You can put strips of copper all around your beds. They will not cross it. Guest guest
i read that you can shred the same plant and sprinkle the leavings around the living plant and the snails will just eat that stuff instead of the living plant. we have snails, too, in our lettuce bed, but they only expressed interest in a couple of romaine plants and left everything else alone. chandelle On Sun, Jul 6, 2008 at 1:55 PM, Sarah E. Guest guest
I use Sluggo in my garden which is a non-toxic slug and snail poison that is safe to use around pets and wildlife. Of course it is toxic to the snails and it sounds like you want to avoid that. Another thing I do is try to plant those plants that are not hurt or eaten by the slugs. They leave my roses, cosmos, coreopsis and many other flowers alone. Another option is to go out at night and hand pick them. You can give them a home somewhere other than your garden if you don't want to kill them (the hill behind my house is where some of them go). When someone at work had a duck, she would accept donations. Connie , " Sarah E. Guest guest
I put shallow bowls of beer out in the garden and the snails drink themselves to death... no joke. just make sure the snails can get into the bowl and there are no kids who are going to get into your make shift snail saloon. Guest guest
This is also how I handle my slug problem. I use lids from mayonaise jars and put them in the ground so the rim is flush with the dirt. Fill with cheap beer, slugs die happy. We had a freak hail storm that destroyed the hostas, so I am ignore the slugs this year. --- On Wed, 7/9/08, mamaslinks <mamaslinks wrote: mamaslinks <mamaslinks Re: Snails in my Flower Bed!
