Guest guest
Corn syrup and HFCS are EVIL, and should definitely be avoided! My children react behaviorally to it, and I'm sure lots of other kids do, too, but no one has put the pieces together. I heard recently that even the FDA (*GASP*!!! LOL!) was considering declaring products made with corn syrup to not be allowed anymore to be called " natural " . I hope they follow through on this one, and restore some faith in what they are supposed to do to protect our kids. Recently there was a 7UP commercial that bragged about " only 5 ingredients " and how they were now " all natural " . I checked, in case some miracle had occurred. Nope--still had corn syrup in it. Well, recently I noticed they had changed their commercial to say it " had all natural FLAVORS " . Hmmmmm..... Bottom line--corn syrup is considered by experts to be a neurotoxin, and should be avoided! Glucose is another name for corn syrup, for those who read labels. Choose candy and other products that contain real sugar, sugar syrup, or another natural sweetner you want your family to have. A hint if you buy soda for your family--buy Coke and Sprite at Passover time, and look for the special Kosher for Passover caps on the bottles. They make Coke and Sprite with real sugar, not corn syrup, at Passover time. Stock up! Or buy the Whole Foods brand, or another brand that's made with sugar only. Guest guest
Here is an article I read on high fructose corn syrup. I got it out of my Dr. Sears Newsletter (I think). And people wonder why childhood obesity and diabetes is such an epidemic! HIGH-FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP News about this inexpensive highly concentrated sweetener seems to be everywhere. This product which is synthesized from cornstarch is widely used in the food industry, most notably as the primary sweetener in soft drinks and baked goods. Cheaper to produce than traditional sugar, use of it increased 1,000% from its introduction in 1970 to 1990. How it is different from traditional sugar (sucrose)? High-fructose corn syrup is processed differently by our bodies than with sucrose. Our bodies instead tend to send fructose directly to the liver, instead of through the intermediary breakdown steps that sucrose goes through. The liver's response to the fructose is to generate new fat cells, which it then dumps into the bloodstream as triglycerides (fatty acids). How Does it Affect My Child? Studies have shown that fructose does not illicit a response from insulin and other hormones that signal that a child is full, which helps regulate food intake and body weight. Also, those triglycerides that we spoke about above are increased and develop a resistance to insulin. High-fructose corn syrup changes how a child's body handles fats, so we end up storing fats and burning sugar. The risk with high-fructose corn syrup is that it can contribute towards weight gain and type II diabetes in children. However, a child may not necessarily be overweight or obese to acquire type II diabetes
Guest guest
Gayle--Let me clarify on the soda issue. IF you CHOOSE to buy soda for your family, knowing it isn't the healthiest option (which of course we all know it isn't), at least avoid the corn syrup containing ones (and of COURSE the ones that contain artificial colors and flavors). Better? Marilyn **************Get the scoop on last night's hottest shows and the live music scene in your area - Check out TourTracker.com! " -- Or better yet, avoid soda altogether since it leaches calcium from the blood which in turn cause the blood to take the calcium from the bones causing - you guessed it - osteoporosis in teenagers. The incident rate of osteoporosis in teenagers/young people is on the rise. It is suspected that may be, in large part, due to the incredible amount of soda kids drink causing osteoporosis to show up at earlier ages. And when you stop and think about it, what does soda offer in the way of nutrients? Nothing except calories which also makes it a major contributor to obesity in children. Guest guest
I have been sending letters to every company I use with this in it. I dont know if it will help but I want them to know that people are upset. Jacqueline Bodnar <jb Sunday, July 13, 2008 5:17:53 PM RE: HFCS You are right, HFCS is evil stuff. Guest guest
I wish more companies would be threatened with lawsuits over claiming to be " all natural " . I even wrote to a company over their claims and they replied that they did not use preservatives. Deceptive marketing? Recently I bought my baby those Arrowroot cookies, without reading the label first. They have corn syrup in them! They are for babies!!! I plan on writing them next. However, I did find some cookies that only had sugar, they are marketed as Disney Cars. I am not one to give my kids a lot of junk, but I do allow them treats after lunch and my toddler LOVES Cars and saw them, so...you know how that goes. As for the soda, although I rarely ever drink it anymore, my brother was telling me that he buys Coke at Sam's Club in glass bottles with no HFCS in it. It is made in Mexico and still has just sugar. I am still breastfeeding, so no caffeine for me, but if it's something you have to have, it's worth looking into. We should start a campaign that is aimed at banning HFCS and all of the others related to it. With all of the studies done on it, it's a wonder it's still out there! And finding it's way into everything, including many breads! Anyone up to it?? , " Jacqueline Bodnar " <jb wrote: > > You are right, HFCS is evil stuff. Guest guest
Is HFCS the same things as the traditional " corn syrup " that you buy at the grocery store? Guest guest
High fructuose corn syrup is more like the crack of sugar. However, regular corn syrup is most likely made from genetically modified corn. --- On Mon, 7/14/08, Heather Hossfeld <hlh4850 wrote: Heather Hossfeld <hlh4850 Re: Re: HFCS Monday, July 14, 2008, 1:14 PM Is HFCS the same things as the traditional " corn syrup " that you buy at the grocery store?
