Guest guest
I know this has been talked about some here. But one of my neighbor's (down the road) daughter was diagnosed with celiac's disease. They are not vegan but her daughter is allergic to dairy as well. Are than any resources for dairy-free & gluten-free meals (either recipes or restaurants that they could go to while traveling that may have a separate menu). Any advice at all that I could pass along? Thanks, Renee
Guest guest
If they come to Chicago, there is a cool little restaurant that is vegan, gluten free, sustainable, organic, etc. http://www.thebalancedkitchen.com/ “I cook with wine; sometimes I even add it to the food.” –W. Guest guest
Renee--There's a FABULOUS group called GFCFrecipes that can really help with the questions your neighbor might have. Brenda-Lee Olsen is the moderator there, and she is VERY knowledgeable, as are many of the wonderful members. BL, as she's called, also works for Miss Roben's, or Allergy Grocer (_www.allergygrocer.com_ (http://www.allergygrocer.com) ) . If she joins the list, she can get a discount on all the incredible gluten free (and many casein-free as well) products on their website. Your friend will have a much easier road if she joins this list, believe me! HTH! Guest guest
Additionally, they are in the process of becoming certified Kosher. One of my neighbors, who was recently diagnosed with celiac disease, visited with them and was given some great tips for grocery shopping and cooking. Guest guest
I have a couple of people in my family who have Celiac and while they are not vegan, they have both purchased the cookbook Vegan Planet because it has so many fantastic recipes in it that just happen to be gluten free or are easily made GF (i.e. pasta dishes, just substitute GF pasta). It is a great cookbook for anyone, I think -- our family has used it extensively and there is such a wide variety of good stuff in it. Guest guest
We are not gluten free, but I second Vegan Planet as a great cookbook! Guest guest
Oh, that's news about the kosher certification. When Josh (the owner) and I talked about it a while back, it sounded like it was too much of a hardship, what with having to be closed on Friday and Saturday. How are they getting around that? Hmm...I think that besides that they are pretty much kosher, though I'm not sure if all their equipment and pans are new. Yes, West Rogers Park is a trip for us but it takes more than distance to keep me away from gourmet gluten-free food and Indian buffets on Devon Street. Not to mention your lakefront and funky, multicultural, progressive vibe. I heart Rogers Park! We are meeting friends at Govinda's at the Krishna Temple tonight - first time I've been there in years - for the $5.00 buffet. It used to be $3.50, but I'm not complaining.
