Microwave and dishwasher!

Rebeca--I am not really aware of why vegans (or anyone) should not use a

dishwasher. Did I miss something? I have six kids still living home. My

dishwasher is run usually twice a day, and I rarely can get the sink empty

before

bedtime, even at that. I am hoping to put a second dishwasher in when we get

our

new house. NO WAY could I (or any of us) keep up with doing dishes by hand,

and I wouldn't try.

As to the microwave, I know there are definite safety and food quality

issues, but we still do use ours. I wish I could get to the point where I felt I

WANTED to get rid of it, but I am far from there yet, and probably never will

be. That issue seems a lot clearer than the dishwasher one, and I would

suggest that if you can at all part with yours, or never buy one, then that's

probably the way to go. We don't use ours a LOT, but I can't see not having one

at

this point.

I wonder how other vegetarian - vegan parents handle the issue of: Using

microwave and dishwasher?

Do you avoid the use of them? Do you partially use them? What do you think about

them?

My husband and I are having a dilemma about the use of it.

Any help will be really appreciated

Thanks

i have seen no reliable scientific information that safely sealed microwaves

are dangerous. we just don't use them because we don't have a good place to

put one. we rarely have food to reheat anyway.

energy-efficient dishwashers are sometimes better, as far as water use, than

hand-washing and rinsing. it depends on a wide variety of variables. but

my husband likes to hand-wash so he does it a lot. i hate to hand wash and

if it's up to me the kitchen is strewn with dishes and we're eating lunch

off the back of a pot lid or something. :) so i use the dishwasher,

without hot water, on the energy- or water-saver setter, and i only do a

full load. we keep our supply of pots, pans, dishes and storage container

very small so i only run the dishwasher a few times a week.

Hi Rebeca,

We use the microwave and dishwasher - though our preference is to cook

on the stove since it seems more natural to cook on fire than with

microwaves, and we don't use the dishwasher unless it's full, to save

energy/water. But we use both. Is there a vegetarian/vegan reason not

to use either? (She asks almost not wanting to know . . .) :-)

Have a great day,

Rebeca,

We do not own a microwave. I am very clear that the molecular structure and

energy of the food is way different from a microwave. When I am out, and

nothing else is available, I will use one. But that is rare.

We do use a dishwasher in our home as well as wash dishes by hand.

Rebeca,

We do not use a microwave/ never owned one in the 15 years we have been

together- I am not comfortable with the fact that it can actually change the

molecular chemistry of some foods when it cooks- but that is me, definitely

a personal call.

Here is an article on dishwashing vs dishwaser from an eco perspective

http://www.ecojoes.com/dishwasher-versus-hand-washing/

we actually use the dishwasher, already installed in our apartment, and I am

not up to saving handwashing for a big load- it stinks up our small space to

let the dishes accumulate in the sink, so I stick it all in the dishwasher

and then make sure we have a big load- it saves on water for us vs.

handwashing. but doesn't do much for the energy use.. oh well- we try our

best!

Our dishwasher died about a year ago; we can't afford to replace it and really

don't miss it (except now, when it is too hot to wash dishes).

We use our microwave for thawing, popcorn and heating.  We never, ever, ever put

in anything plastic (except for the mcrowave popcorn popper) and never have

anything in for more than four minutes.

We have used them both. We went for years without a microwave, and got

one as a gift (though it broke recently, and we've not replaced it). I

have not found any compelling evidence for not using it. I forget the

studies I found and read, but contrary to what I had heard about it

breaking down nutrients, it just isn't so. My husband is also very

skeptical of things, and he's not found anything else to support the

claimes (other than his mom saying so, but she's been wrong on things

and he's won bets with her on nearly everything he has challenged her

on). :) I know some will not use it, I happen to like it for

convenience sake, like baking potatoes in summer, I don't heat up the

whole kitchen - it's easier to heat up water for tea and so on.

We only use the dish washer if it is completely full. It's a newer

one, so uses less water. I think it depends on your situation, wether

to use or not. For me it's handy and we have fewer discussions about

housework and me being overwhelmed when we use it. We all load dishes,

our son fills the soap part and turns it on, my husband or I put

things away (our son does the silverware since he can reach that, and

the cooking utensils). For MY sanity, we use it.

Also, we run it at night, when power is less expensive, and it takes

us maybe 2 days to fill it up.

We also save water in other ways around the house :

I have never watered my lawn (at least not yet this year), and yet I

still have to mow it every dang week, I only water my garden when it

starts looking wilty, and maybe the first month it was planted, but

not since then till today, maybe once before that I did water the

garden this morning, after all this heat we've had this week - it

needed it, and it's flourishing, we do some grey water, and have plans

to get the toilet tank sinks installed for the bathrooms and I want a

rain barrel- our water bill for the last 3 months was something like

$3.57 or something very low - the city we live in bills

water/garbage/electricity in one bill for every 3 months. I think

we're doing pretty well.

I'm sure we're not typical, but that's what we do. I do plan to

replace our microwave at some point, but it's low priority right now,

and we've lived without it for longer than we had one.

i agree with robin; i believe the primary problem with cooking in a

microwave is most people do so with plastic. we've eliminated plastic in our

kitchen for the most part and even if i did have a microwave i would never

heat anything in plastic.

I agree... you should never use plastic in the microwave. Other than

that we do use it. From what I've read it's actually better on the

environment to use a microwave because it uses so much less energy by

cooking things faster. Just use glass dishes (microwave safe) to heat

things up. I don't cook dinner in it by no means, but I do use it to

heat things up. I do use my dishwasher as well. However, I always wait

until it is completely full (so I actually turn it on probably twice per

week) and I use environmentally friendly dishwashing soap by Seventh

Generation.

We don't use plastic either and we haven't had a microwave for over nine years.

I can't imagine ever wanting to buy one. If I don't want to heat up the

kitchen, I use the toaster oven for some things or make things which don't need

to be cooked.

We currently don't use a dishwasher because ours broke a couple months ago, but

when we did use it we washed only full loads and didn't use the drying function

(just opened it up and let everything air dry).

We didn't have a clothes dryer for over a year and that was really nice. We

still hang most of our clothes to dry, but in the cold weather or when it is

really humid (or when I'm really behind on diapers) we use the clothes dryer.

Most commercial dishwasher (and clothing) detergents contain phospates (no they

Hi Robin,

You're so right. That's why we use phosphate free products (Ecover tabs

in the dishwasher, Earth Friendly dish soap, Seventh Generation laundry

soap, etc.). We stopped using those phosphate/non-biodegradable things

years ago. Sometimes, with co-ops, they're even cheaper than mainstream

brands!

Have a great evening,

Thanks guys, for your inputs about microwave and dishwasher. I am sorry if I did

get into the details of why I brought these questions.

Here is the thing:

I attended to a seminar were I was told that using microwave can kill to a 50%

of the food's nutrients. I always tried to avoid the use of microwave, I do not

use plastics at all in it, but some times when I am in a hurry  it seems like

microwave is my only option.

Regarding to dishwasher, I almost never use it, even when I have one in my

kitchen. When I see the material that it has, sort of plastic (white color)

wrapping the inside of it, I kind of wonder if it is OK to use it or maybe with

the hot water these materials can release some kind of chemicals that can be

harmful, but of course we do not notice it, or maybe I am just a little too

paranoid about anything that can look as plastic.

In response to the dishwasher question, not sure why you asked, but

if

it has anything to do with plastics, be careful washing any plastics

in hot water like your dishwasher would do. Certain plastics release

toxins when heated.
