Guest guest
There is also a great video from an environmental/religious perspective call A Sacred Duty. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9RxmTGHZgE. Ive been looking for research on the effects of meat and all I find is stuff on fat. My husband is still a meat eater and I am constantly asked this question> I would love some information. > There are a TON of great books out there that will give the story about the dangers of meat eating. There are also videos/DVD's by physicians like Dr. John McDougall and Dr. Joel Fuhrman, available on their websites (their books are excellent, too!). Fat is definitely not the only issue when it comes to meat! Mad Cow Disease IS in this country, despite our government's assurances to the contrary. Cows and other animals are fed all sorts of drugs and other things that then pass to us through eating them. Diseased animals are used for food in supermarkets every day--it is NOT all inspected and found disease free before it is sold to the public! The fat is not the only source of cholesterol in animals. The meat itself contains cholesterol. Dairy products, of course, too, as well as eggs. Here are some good books I have that might give a better picture: Diet for a New America by John Robbins--an older book, but still relevant today--mostly from a compassionate/ environmental viewpoint The Undigestible Truth About Meat by Dr. Gina Shaw The Vegan Diet as Chronic Disease Prevention by Kerrie Saunders Mad Cowboy by Howard Lyman--he's a former cattle rancher, now vegan, who testified at Oprah's trial against the beef industry The China Study by T. Colin Campbell and Thomas M. Campbell-- excellent comprehensive long term study on health and diet The Power Of Your Plate by Neal Barnard, MD--Dr. B is the head of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine Food for Life by Neal Barnard, MD These are just the secular/health or environmentally oriented books. There are also several excellent Christian books I have that urge people to eat vegan diets for religious reasons. And there are also numerous books out there on the dangers of dairy products. HTH! Guest guest
Now, Marilyn - do share the titles of the Christian books, please! Are you saying that these books might have the answer to the comment " BUT THE BIBLE SAYS WE ARE TO EAT ANIMALS! " I don't know the bible well enough yet to respond to this comment. Hilary Yes, Hilary, there are answers to that question from the Bible. I didn't originally post that list because I was limited on time, and I didn't know if anyone wanted it. But someone did e me offlist and ask, and I compiled a list for her. Here's what I wrote: We're going to be relocating soon, probably to eastern PA or mid-FL. Consequently, many of my books are already in storage. I did leave a bunch out, though. Here are the few I thought might be relevant for you, written from a Christian perspective. Hope something here is helpful! Marilyn You Don't Have to be Sick! by Rev. George Malkmus --Rev. M. runs Hallelujah Acres (_www.hacres.com_ (http://www.hacres.com/) ). Malkmus Winning the Battle for the Body by Douglas D. Polk God's Way to Ultimate Health by Dr. George H. Malkmus and Michael Dye Also good: In the Beginning God Said Eat Raw Food by William D. Scott--I think I got this one through amazon.com Good News for All Creation by Stephen R. Kaufman and Nathan Braun--I bought this one at a Christian Vegetarian conference a couple of years ago. Available through CVA? Guest guest
Let me second a suggestion Marilyn had in her list of books on this topic - I am reading The China Study right now and it is AMAZING how obvious it has become that eating meat is not right for our bodies. I feel like my jaw is continuously dropping as I go through this book. It's a little bit of a tough read if you aren't familiar with biology but I can tell that he has put a lot of effort in explaining things in a way that the average person can understand.
