Guest guest
OMG. Several people on Dr. Fuhrman's Eat to Live had recently sent in some suggestions of YouTube videos to watch. I had never seen videos on animal cruelty, factory farming, etc., although I had heard about these things many times. Finally today I decided to sit and watch some of them. I saw part 1 of a talk by John Robbins. Very nice, great speaker, but nothing I didn't already know. Then I watched Earthlings. Startling, excellent, compelling--and graphic! I happened to be watching the segment on animal abuse when my 10yo wandered into my bedroom. I am SICK right now because he happened to catch a part when a dog was shot, and dumped into a garbage truck still alive! I couldn't even imagine such a thing happening, and I had no answers for his questions. I HATE that he saw that. After Earthlings, I had a few more vidoes I had been meaning to see, and I had a bit more time, so I started watching Meet Your Meat. I got as far as the scene of people THROWING chickens into a truck, and my mouth dropped open, and I couldn't watch any more! They THREW them! I will go back to it, and watch the other videos, but I have had enough for now. I have heard over and over that these videos have convinced people to stop eating meat, and I understood how that could possibly happen. At least I thought I understood. Now I KNOW. I am not sure how the people in these videos could survive with the things they do. They're not upset. They go home to their wives and kids, and take them out to dinner and to the park, and even pet their dogs. I am a 50 year old woman who has raised nine kids and been through a LOT in my life, and come through it, and I'm sitting here crying and I want to throw up. Guest guest
((Marilyn)) I hear you, Marilyn. I tend not to watch those movies because a)I'm already vegan and that's not going to change and b)they tend to make me so upset I don't even want to deal with humanity on any level after seeing them. That's not productive or useful. I would recommend pacing yourself with these films for your own sake. They can be really soul-crushing but in small doses, they can also motivate. Set some protective limits for yourself. I know for myself, seeing a film about the abuse of performing elephants (I think that it was from PETA), it was so deeply disturbing that I was personally traumatized and had PTSD-like symptoms for two seeks. As for how people can do it, they have to be switching off a part of their brains and objectifying the animals. Unless one is clearly sociopathic and sadistic, in other words, has a mental illness, that's the only way that the " average person " can commit acts of cruelty. Peace to you, Marilyn. Marla > OMG. Guest guest
Marilyn, for what it's worth, i completely understand your feelings. it's taken me countless years and i still can't watch more than ten minutes of Meet Your Meat in a sitting before i get violently ill. the one and only time i tried to watch more than that, i literally couldn't eat solid foods again for about a week and i was utterly inconsolable. Guest guest
My mum worked for an animal advocacy group and was doing fundraising. She had a stall with graffic pictures of animal cruelty, and to this day she has still never seen those pictures. She would just put up the board without looking and stand in front of it, referring to it but never looking at it! I tried to watch a video on live animal skinning. I shook so badly and started to dry wretch that i had to turn it off and was in a daze for ages. I think the films are really good at shocking people, but i also think that sometimes they need to be toned down a bit so people will actually watch them, i think if people turn them off straight away than it can defeat the purpose.
