Guest guest
Hi, My daughter, turning 3 this fall, is starting preschool this week. I'm curious if anyone on this list has recommendations for identifying her as a vegan so that no one accidentally gives her non-vegan snacks or birthday treats. Maybe an ID bracelet? Thanks for any ideas you may have. Jessica
Guest guest
There's a company called Mabel's Labels that makes labels for all kinds of things -- we have ordered a variety of their products and been really happy with them. They have dishwasher-safe labels for food containers etc. They have allergy labels but you can determine the text so could make them suitable for any type of diet. They have also just introduced wrist bands where you have complete control over the text. They have lots of bright colours and funky graphics, great customer service, and they are very fast -- I have received my orders within a few days of placing them online. http://www.mabel.ca/mabel.php?n=root Heather Jessica Almy wrote: > > Hi, > > My daughter, turning 3 this fall, is starting preschool this week. Guest guest
Even preschoolers can be taught about healthy food choices. My own two boys were nutrition experts by ages 3 & 4. They could spot an " artificial " a mile away! Just speak to them honestly and they WILL get it. I love the idea of an ID bracelet! Have to look into that for my own toddler! Guest guest
Jessica, We have also thought about the same thing about an ID bracelet. My brother-in-law wears a mold-allergin alert bracelet and my mother has a diabetes one, so it would be the same concept, although your children may/may not be vegan due to allergies or intolerances. I think it is a great idea! We also mark all our children's school and medical files with the notice that they are vegetarians. We also in person, notify the school staff and our children's teachers and we have informed the other parents, as they have informed us of peanut allergies and other dietary concerns for their children. The teachers and other school staff need to be well-informed and if in doubt, don't offer it to the child. While the classroom is not allergin-free/vegan, the teachers guides parents in choices of food acceptable to all the children when a parent expresses an interest in bringing in snacks and when food is brought in they are well aware of who can eat what. At a school event, our son was inadvertently (we did not know food snacks were being provided and not by the regular school staff) served a hot dog and he (at age 4) was able to refuse it for himself and his younger sister. Empowering your child helps, too. Danielle , " Jessica Almy " <j_almy wrote: > > Hi, > > My daughter, turning 3 this fall, is starting preschool this week. Guest guest
not sure about Bracelet IDs but we have been telling our son that we are vegetarians since he started talking. At first it looked to omuch and sometimes my son didn't seem to understand etc but now that he is close to 5 he himself says out to people that he is veg and can't eat meat. So i would suggest you start with your daughter (even if she doesnt understand just have her get used to the term vegan to the extent that she starts telling people that she is vegan) and secondly i keep stressing it at the school that my son doesn;'t eat meant to everyone, to all his teachers and ontop preschools have an allergy list that you can update ur childs name with what he/she is allergic to, you can update it with this info as well. hope this helps Shree --- On Mon, 9/8/08, wrote: Digest Number 2469 Monday, September 8, 2008, 10:48 AM ______________________ 4. Guest guest
Jessica, When my son first went to daycare I used laptop lunch boxes and stuck labels all over his lunchbox- very colorful and he thought it looked cool and it was very clear to the staff what he could and could not have.. I get these through stuck on you- they are called the allergy labels, but they do not mention allergies on them, just say egg free zone, dairy free zone etc. I chose this over a wristband because for us it made it more fun and Conner was not as aware personally of it as he would have been if he had to wear a wristband all day (this is just what worked for us- I did not want him to be self conscious of a wristband that other kids did not have). https://www.stuckonyou.biz/usa/index.asp I also typed up a quick one paragraph on Conner, with a recent picture. It was something like Hi I am Conner and I cannot have the following products.. very high level- I passed them out to all of the teachers at the daycare, not just his in case they subbed each other out during breaks. I did not say he was allergic, but I also did not say he was not. It said Conner cannot have the following- I found by not providing the reason why most everyone assumed it was due to an allergy and was much more careful in asking me if something was okay or not. (They also posted it on a bulletin board in his class to increase awareness). I also respectfully requested if there was a special event that I have at least one day notice so I could provide an equivalent and I kept some fruit juice sweetened cookies in his cubby so that for an unplanned event, parent brought cupcakes without warning to the center for a birthday etc. Conner could have something he loved and not feel left out and I knew it was okay. Whenever in doubt the teacher loved this because if she was not sure she just gave him 2 small cookies- it made us all feel better (although I will not tell you how frequently we had to replenish, it gave me heartburn realizing how frequently treats were given out based on this). This worked out really well, from the age of 1-4 he was at this daycare and we only had one incident the entire time when he was given a cupcake that had eggs and dairy by a new teacher that I had not gotten to midyear when he was 4 (and who had not read the board in the class). But Conner was so used to the drill he told her that he could not have those and went and got his cookies out of the cubby and told her he could only have 2 for his treat.. so he never actually ate it..
