Guest guest
Hilary--And you have helped ME! I was sure my dh's and 9yo's eating issues were mild Asperger's. And in the case of dh, they still very well might be, when combined with the other things going on with him. When you first mentioned SED, I thought " Oh great--another label to put on people " ! Now after checking out some of the SED websites (do you know about the parent and adult forums at _www.fussy-eaters.com_ (http://www.fussy-eaters.com) ?) I am reaching an entirely different conclusion. I am starting to believe my 9yo is a classic case of SED. His food list is only about a dozen items long. He has to have certain brands of certain items (like only using 4C parmesan and romano cheese). He focuses strongly on carbs. He will NOT NOT NOT try new foods. I could not understand what was wrong with this kid, when the seven siblings before him and one after never had such food issues! Anyway, not sure where to go from here, but wanted to say thank you for posting about this! After reading through some of the parent forum topics, I can see I'm definitely not alone with this problem. Marilyn **************Psssst...Have you heard the news? Guest guest
(used to be CHANGE THE HUSBAND'S MIND thread) Wow, so after reading the posts suggesting that maybe my husband's eating issues were due to a disorder of sorts, I did some googling and found a really close match with Selective Eating Disorder. This is huge. It also said that it can be linked to OCD, which makes a lot of sense because my husband's family all have various anxiety disorders. It is very unlikely that he is the only one of the bunch that doesn't have to deal with anxiety. So, we'll be looking into this soon for sure. I had mentioned this to the therapist in my private session and she certainly agreed that this sounds like what is going on. She also said that SED is such a newly discovered disorder that there isn't much out there about it yet. I don't know what is going to come of this yet but it does help me understand what is going on so much more. I don't know if it will affect his decision to eat meat again, but my thought is maybe if we can work on this eating problem to where he can eventually eat more vegetarian foods, he might start enjoying being a vegetarian. Though after I say that, I remember that his main issue with being vegetarian is the label. There is a lot to work on over here, for sure. Thanks to all who put your thoughts about this out there. It has helped a LOT. Hilary
