Guest guest
Hello, my eldest daughter (10yrs) is in Guides and going on a camp weekend this weekend. She has been many times before and I always send a separate cooler with vegan alternates to whatever the others are having - her Guiders have always been fantastic with this. This weekend they are tent camping and having camp fires each evening. So lots of marshmallows! I know I can get vegan ones via vegan essentials, pangea and likely other US websites - but not in time for this Friday. Anyone with any ideas for something I can send instead that she can heat up over the fire, will taste good and will help her feel a little less " different " . (There is nowhere I know of near me (Toronto) that has them) Thanks in advance for any suggestions :-) ---------------*********-----------------------\ -------------------- For a compassionate world, gwynt Gwyneth Treharne ---------------<><><>--------------------------\ -----------------
Guest guest
Gwyneth, Some Whole Foods in major cities now carry Sweet & Sara's vegan marshmallows (which are to die for!!), so it's worth calling your local HFS to see if they've got S & S or something similar. Also, if you have a vegetarian bakery in Toronto, that's another possible source. Finally, go through the archives for this list. Quite a few years ago, there was a surge of homemade marshmallow recipes posted here. Unfortunately, they all took at least the better part of a day, and we were warned that you needed to use an electric mixer with a commercial grade motor, but it's an option. Guest guest
I LOVE (as does my whole family) grilled fruit, especially pineapple. You can grill just about anything. You can pack kabobs with organge, apples, etc., and maybe a little container of chocolate sauce for dipping. --- On Wed, 9/17/08, Gwyneth Treharne <gwynt wrote: Gwyneth Treharne <gwynt Camp fire snack Wednesday, September 17, 2008, 7:13 AM Hello, my eldest daughter (10yrs) is in Guides and going on a camp weekend this weekend. Guest guest
Hi Gwyneth, I'm not far from you, in Waterloo. There is a store in Kitchener called Green Door Vegan Variety that has been carrying the Pangea marshmallows whenever they can get them, and has also started carrying the Sweet & Sara marshmallows. It would likely be about an hour's drive for you but I'm thinking if we have them here, there's probably somewhere in TO that has them too since you generally have a lot more selection there -- maybe you could e-mail Sweet & Sara to ask for a list of area distributors. Here's the Green Door web site: http://www.greendooronline.ca/ Good luck! Guest guest
maybe roasted banans with chocolate chips and nuts? Kind of like a banana spilt sans ice cream. Also I have done smore for my daughter with marshmallow creme instead of marshmallows. There are some vegan ones, like schmukers (? spelled wrong) Not healthiest but sometimes we can splurge. Guest guest
Hi, Have you tried the Big Carrot in the east end? http://www.thebigcarrot.ca/ They have an extensive grocery section. You might try calling them. Paula (fellow Torontonian) , Gwyneth Treharne <gwynt wrote: > > Hello, my eldest daughter (10yrs) is in Guides and going on a camp weekend > this weekend. Guest guest
I haven't looked for these since becoming vegan instead of just vegetarian, but the instant biscuit dough that comes in a tube is great when roasted on a stick, similar to what you do for marshmallows. When I worked at a summer camp, we would do this and then coat with margarine and roll it in cinnamon/sugar. It's actually somewhat easier for little kids than marshmallows as it doesn't fall off or easily catch on fire. :-) Heather Clark http://unsheeply.net , Laura Ballinger Morales <lballinger wrote: > > maybe roasted banans with chocolate chips and nuts? Guest guest
We've made vegan s'mores using bananas instead of marshmallows. If you want, you can heat the bananas in a frying pan or other camping kitchen utensil. ~Valerie , Gwyneth Treharne <gwynt wrote: > > Hello, my eldest daughter (10yrs) is in Guides and going on a camp weekend > this weekend.
