Guest guest
Hi Rebeca, We use probiotics to counter antibiotics - can get them at any health food/natural food store. They're the good flora in yogurt, but in the billions rather than hundreds, like in common yogurt. We take them also when we have colds, tummy issues, etc. - just to get bodies balanced again with the good stuff to fight off any illnesses. We have a powder we use for our almost-4-year-old, and mix it into whatever drink he wants. He loves it. For the grown-ups in the house, we have capsules. Ours are all vegetarian, though I'm not sure all are, so be sure to check - and they have to be kept in the fridge, so they'll be in a fridge in the vitamin/supplement section of the store. As far as diet, I'm not a dietician and don't know of a good site - but I'd up antioxidants (dark berries, etc.) and make an effort to eat a whole foods diet - whole grains not white, fresh fruits and veggies, nuts, beans, less sugar and caffeine and less ideal fatty stuff, and focus on organics as much as possible. You know, the diet we all wish we ate every day since it makes us feel so good? :-) And I've also heard good things about mullien oil and garlic oil drops in the ears for infections - but I don't know the protocol on that, so you might check with a homeopath/herbalist or even the folks in the health food store supplement section. Best of luck. There is just no stress equal to the stress of helping our kids get better from something like this!!! Guest guest
Rebeca, Acidophilus is one of the best ways to get good bacteria back into the system. There are some that are shelf stable and some that need to be in the fridge. As far as the diet is concerned. think about whole foods. Meaning reducing or eliminating refined foods, limiting sugar and white flour. As many veggies and fruits, nuts, whole grains and beans. Very basic. Lots of water. If you want a holistic approach, look for a naturpath or homeopath to help you. Good luck. Laura **************Looking for simple solutions to your real-life financial challenges? Guest guest
Don't beat yourself up!!! I have read that doctors are much less likely to prescribe antibiotics for ear infections, so this may have been necessary. Give you son lots of yoghurt, make sure that it is real yoghut with live cultures. Cranberries and blueberries are also good (sounds like a smoothie to me!) Guest guest
There are many options for probiotics. Ideally, you should be on them all the time since so much of what we encounter every day reduces our good flora (stress, sugar, poor diet, etc.). How old is your son? They make a ton of products for little one that come in chewables or powders. Udo's Choice has an infant/toddler powder that I add to my 11 month old's smoothies. Check your local natural food store and make sure they are keeping them refrigerated (you should, too). You want to look for the highest number of viable organisms you can find (you'll see anywhere from 1 billion up to 35 or 40 billion). You also want to find the broadest spectrum, meaning the most variety of flora. Some only include one type but others will include as many as 14 varieties. Also include everyday foods with probiotics such as soy yogurt. (it will say " live active cultures " or " probiotics " on the container.) For the future, it is really helpful to have kids see a chiropractor. It really reduces, and sometimes eliminates, ear infections. I'm not sure of the complete facts, but it has something to do with keeping the body in alignment thereby allowing the ears to drain properly. Good luck! , Rebeca Llasaca <rllasaca wrote: > > My child has been using antibiotics (Amoxcicillin and clavulanate potassium) for ten days because of ear infection.Unfortunatly I gave him the medicine, feeling kind of guilty because I wish we could have found another alternative solution but anyway..so my question is: > Could you please let me know any kind of treatment or resourcers where I can get information about how to rebuild my son's " good bacteria " that have been afected with the antibiotic or any special diet that I should put him in after his treatment with antibiotics? > thanks in advance > > Rebeca > > --- On Fri, 9/26/08, robin koloms <rkoloms wrote: > robin koloms <rkoloms > Re: Looking for Domestic Sundried Tomatoes > > Friday, September 26, 2008, 1:04 PM > > > > > I have seen these at the farmers' markets in chicago; though they are " unsprayed " not certified organic (an expensive process for a family farm). > > > > Robin > > > > --- On Fri, 9/26/08, admartin5@embarqmai l.com <admartin5@embarqmai l.com> wrote: > > > > admartin5@embarqmai l.com <admartin5@embarqmai l.com> > > Looking for Domestic Sundried Tomatoes > > @gro ups.com > > Friday, September 26, 2008, 10:10 AM > > > > I've looked high and low for organic sun-dried tomatoes that are not imported, but haven't had any success. > > > > Does anyone know where I can buy domestically- grown, organic sun- dried tomatoes? Guest guest
My daughter is 6, and we have been dealing with ear infections since late 2. We were told she had hearing damage from scarring and fluid. (her hearing is fine now.) We tried Everything under the sun, including garlic drops, antibiotics, put in ear tubes and removed adnoids. Nothing worked. Even the tubes fell out only after 3 months when they were supposed to last 1 year. We turned to a homeopathic doctor who recommended removing all dairy and sugar from her diet, putting her on several immune boosting supplements, and we added a non-dairy powdered probiotic we found at whole foods. I thought we ate healthy until this happened, but we have done a complete overhaul of our diets. As long as I fix her meals and she doesn't eat any refined sugar or dairy, she is fine. But there have been times when she has gone to grandma's and drank gatorade for 2 days straight, then come home crying about her ear infections (I think grandma finally got the picture). About the antibiotics, I have always been told to give them a good, refrigerated, probiotic that has all the strains in it. I have heard different theories as to when to give it to them (at night so the little buggies can work while he is sleeping, or in the morning on an empty stomach, or with food). I put the probiotic in her smoothies I make in the morning, so I know it will get taken. Oh, if the ear infections continue, I would recommend investing some money in an ear ease. http://www.earease.com/ It is like a plastic ear cover that can be filled with warm water, and my daughter swears it is the only thing that makes the pain go away. And we have tried warm wash cloths, even putting a cooked onion over her ear (homeopathic remedy). Good luck! <shelly Shelly <shelly _____ On Behalf Of Rebeca Llasaca Friday, September 26, 2008 4:29 PM Re: child using antibiotics for ear infection My child has been using antibiotics (Amoxcicillin and clavulanate potassium) for ten days because of ear infection.Unfortunatly I gave him the medicine, feeling kind of guilty because I wish we could have found another alternative solution but anyway..so my question is: Could you please let me know any kind of treatment or resourcers where I can get information about how to rebuild my son's " good bacteria " that have been afected with the antibiotic or any special diet that I should put him in after his treatment with antibiotics? thanks in advance Rebeca --- On Fri, 9/26/08, robin koloms <rkoloms (AT) (DOT) <rkoloms%40> com> wrote: robin koloms <rkoloms (AT) (DOT) <rkoloms%40> com> Re: Looking for Domestic Sundried Tomatoes @gro <%40> ups.com Friday, September 26, 2008, 1:04 PM I have seen these at the farmers' markets in chicago; though they are " unsprayed " not certified organic (an expensive process for a family farm). Guest guest
I used to get ear infections for what I feel was all the time - but it probably wasn't as much as that. My mom used to just warm olive oil and put a few drops into my ear I think you can use the food grade, but it is also sold in the pharmacy/first aid section as sweet oil. I think mine were also related to dairy (but then my parents also smoked when I was a kid, which also gives children the risk of ear infections). My mom was at least good about not having sugar and we had an organic garden (my grandpa's) from where we got all of our veggies until we moved away when I was about 10. My son used to get ear infections, but when we figured out the dairy, he stopped having them. We were told to just ride it out, give I think motrin (maybe it was tylenol) to ease the pain. We did give him the antibiotics once because it was a handful of days before we were flying to see family, and we thought it was better to ease his discomfort on the plane. His doc said that was fine (they don't like to prescribe anything you don't actually need). Of course, we do yogurt with the antibiotics, as others have suggested already. I can't add to their advice other than I agree with them.
