Guest guest
Hi Everyone Can anyone recommend a vegan cheese that is good enough to use for grilled cheese? Thanks so much!!!
Guest guest
Vegan Rella cheddar. We also get the mozzarella for making pizza's. It really melts easily, the best I've ever seen. We get it usually from our food co-op, but they have it at a place I now can't think of the name of...it's a little health food/grocery store, mostly they have vitamins and such, but they have a limited little grocery store as well - It might be the vitamin shoppe? I wish I could remember if that was the name of the place. Guest guest
We like the Tofutti cheese slices, they are tasty and make good sandwiches. They do get a bit melty. Guest guest
I used a combination of cheeses. It seems like the ones with the flavor or nutritional value don't melt well so I mix them together. Soymag vegan slices have lots of calcium and taste good but don't melt. Follow Your Heart melts pretty well and tastes good but doesn't have much nutritional value. Tofutti slices melt well and taste ok but don't have much nutritional value. I mix them all together and get a nice result with a bit of calcium. There are also some grilled cheese recipes in the Uncheese Cookbook but I've never tried any. , " tammykotowski " <tammykotowski wrote: > > Hi Everyone > Can anyone recommend a vegan cheese that is good enough to use for > grilled cheese? Guest guest
I'm afraid that is the ONLY thing we've come across, in our transition from veg to vegan, that seems to have no palitable substitute. Maybe if someone had never tasted dairy cheese it would be easier. That said, our 5yr old has had a severe dairy protein allergy since 3 mo. old. She goes through phases where she'll want to try VeganRella, but we end up throwing half the pack away. The veggy slices aren't so bad, but they still contain the caseinate, so are lactose free but not vegan. I'd be interested to hear others favs as well , " tammykotowski " <tammykotowski wrote: > > Hi Everyone > Can anyone recommend a vegan cheese that is good enough to use for > grilled cheese? Guest guest
Have you tried teesecheese vegan cheese from chicago soydairy. It has a good taste, can be eaten plain, is great for pizza and melts well for grilled cheese. It is newer so if you haven't you might give it a try. Guest guest
We like Galaxy Nutritional Foods Vegan Slices, in the purple package. They contain calcium and melt fairly well if you let the sandwich sit on the hot pan for a few minutes. I also use a cast iron grill press, which sits on top of the sandwich and helps the heat permeate. For extra flavor, I use Earth Balance to grease the pan. Sometimes I even make this for myself, slipping in some sun-dried tomato and fresh basil. Yum! Mary ______________________________\ ____ ¡Todo sobre Amor y Sexo! Guest guest
I found the key to melting the Follow Your Heart Cheese is baking it in a 450 to 500 degree oven. We've had good results each time at these temperatures.
Guest guest
I can never get it to melt for me. I have burned pizza and had non-melted cheese sandwiches, too). I'll have to try it out as my husband gets that one sometimes when we're out of ours. We have had Teese at the whole foods pizza parlor in the city but have not had any for use in our home. It does melt very well and is very yummy, but the Vegan Rella is the only one I found I really like. I've even made nacho's with the cheddar (both in the oven and the microwave), and it's quite yummy, goopy and messy, it melts and nothing burns. My 5yr old thought it was fun to have such messy food (as nacho's should be) I was surprised because he's not usually one for such things, but he was excited to try it. It stays melty for a while, too. I also like the texture of it when it's not melted over that of the FYH (that one is too soft for me, the Rella seems more like a brick of cheese, especially for the cheddar). My 5yr old would eat the whole brick if he could - we do also like the tofutti slices (and I think they melt rather well). The remind me of the packaged slices, but getting them from the store, we have had some that was bad, but we just returned it, traded it in for a new one, and it was fine. I wish there were more vegans in my food buying club/co-op, as they have the vegan bleu cheese and the feta, but I don't know that I can commit to a whole case of either by myself. Guest guest
The " Sheese " brand melts pretty well and has a very good taste. Out of all the mock cheeses, I would say it's the best for melting and using as a true cheese replacement (but it still doesn't taste like cheese, imo). It's crazy expensive, though (I think $8 for a small package), and not everybody carries it. I know that Pangea (veganstore.com) has it. We found it at my local co-op. Guest guest
I second that. VeganRella didn't melt years ago but it was reformulated (years ago). I find that it continues to melt after being removed from the heat so you have to learn when to remove your sandwich or your grilled cheese will leak. We use VeganRElla on pizzas, in casseroles and cheese sauces and just to eat sliced from the block. Carrol , Missie <mszzzi wrote: > > Vegan Rella cheddar.
