Guest guest
Hi Cindy, We are in San Diego County, too - in North County. Do you know of any vegetarian play groups/family groups around here? I know we've talked on this list about getting southern Orange County/Riverside County/San Diego folks together, since we don't have much like this down here, but nothing that I know has happened on that front yet. We'd really love to have more vegetarians in our son's life. ('Course, he sometimes gets vegetarian confused with organic, and if someone says something isn't organic, he gets all indignant that he won't eat it . . . we smile and take out his organic snacks.) :-) Anyway, great to see someone from the hood (or at least a nearby hood - or at least one within an hour's drive). :-) Have a great day, Lorraine On Behalf Of Cindy K. Tuesday, November 18, 2008 7:20 AM " Turkey Day " One different take we have on the whole Turkey Day thing is from Native Americans, who saw turkey as a symbol of give-away. It sure helps to tell and retell that story to my kids. We have tried hard to create traditions involving gratidude and because we are blessed to live in San Diego, we are usually able to incorporate a hike into our day. But I do hate the whole holiday revolving around food, especially a dead bird. And the weird songs and games that they teach the kids in school. If the kids really knew that the poor turkey was going to be killed and that they would be eating a dead bird.... My friend (NOT a vegetarian) told me her son said isn't it funny that there's an animal called a chicken and a food we eat called chicken...? Yeah, funny. At least if my kids do start eating meat someday, they will know where it came from.
Guest guest
You know, I hear that all the time: " But they're farmed for the special purpose of eating " - so I think that to most adults, they aren't REAL animals. When I make the point that to me, they may as well be eating their dog, their cat, or any other beloved pet, I get a lot of weird looks and some derision. But aren't they all animals? What's really the difference? I don't get it. ________________________________ Jacqueline Bodnar <jb Tuesday, November 18, 2008 4:03:57 PM RE: " Turkey Day " Cindy wrote: " My friend (NOT a vegetarian) told me her son said isn't it funny that there's an animal called a chicken and a food we eat called chicken...? I was honest and told her what hamburger, hot dogs, etc. were. My sister was very mad at me when I dropped my niece off at home and she told my sister that she no longer wanted to eat animals. My sister's response was to look at me and say " she'll eat meat if I have to shove it down her throat. " So what my sister did was create a big lie... she taught my niece that they were not actual cows. They were " special cows. " Meat didn't come from real cows, it came from " special cows. " And that's what my niece thought as a child. She removed the connection so she wouldn't know it was the animal, not from the animal, etc. So in my nieces little world there were two different kinds of cow in the world - one that grazed and one that was not real, but a special source of food. Sick I tell you. If you have to lie to your kids there's something wrong... Jacqueline
Guest guest
Hi Jenni, My grandparents had a farm up until I was around 10 - the rule for us and for my mom's generation was to never name the farm animals, so you won't become attached. My uncle (who lived and helped on the farm in the later years) went one further and suggested that we not count the babies, since you never know what might happen. (There was definitely a family belief that farm animals were different than others.) 'Course, as soon as we heard about a birthing, us kids would run up and count and name the babies. (We weren't kids for a lot of rules, regardless.) :-) What this did was some very interesting things - many of us became vegetarians, some just stopped eating the animals from the farm, and part of my family is in the cattle industry. Everyone used the info/experiences on the farm to make their own decisions. In answer to your question - I think the difference is that some people see humans as better than other animals, and thus worthy of better treatment and the use/abuse/eating/wearing/etc. of the other animals . . .. but pets are often excluded from this belief. I see a cat as a human as a dog as a gorilla, but not everyone does. I don't understand the lack of that belief among vegetarians, either, but it's not universal. I guess the real answer is something like what happened in my farming family - some vegetarians believe one thing, some believe another thing, but in this case, we all can just love our common ground: not eating our friends. :-) Have a great day! Guest guest
Hey Lorraine and Cindy, Sorry I don't usually post here, I just had to butt in. I am in Riverside County, near Temecula. We haven't met a lot of veg*n people around here and would love to know more. We do have a meetup group in Temecula for vegans. It is a small, new group, but there are some kids in the group! If you ever get something local started, I would love to know about it. Thanks! Jane
Guest guest
Hi Jane, We're in San Marcos, north central San Diego County -- so not super far from Temecula. I'd love to know about when your group meets -- and I'd love to let you know if/when something happens with a group in this area. Every time I get excited about the idea, I get bogged down with work and just can't even attend anything, let alone help put it together. I know there's a need for a like-minded group like that here, though. Hope to meet you and your family sometime! Guest guest
Hey Lorraine and other So Cal veg*ns, My husband and I are actually from San Diego county, Poway actually, so we are quite familiar with San Diego suburbs. If you would like to join our vegan meetup group, here is the link: http://vegan.meetup.com/517/. We welcome vegetarians but ask that they bring vegan food for potlucks. We have only had one meet up so far but I think we will try to do about 1 meetup a month. There is a San Diego veg*n meet up group too. Here is their link http://www.meetup.com/SD-Vegetarians-Unite/ It is great to meet more veg people, very empowering, just makes you realize you are not alone. I can let you know the next time we have a meetup here and maybe you can come up and join us. Nice to meet you!
