Guest guest
We considered home schooling when our daughter was small, and rejected it for a number of reasons. Once you are clear on your reasons for homeschooling, I suggest that you look for a group of homeschoolers in your area who have the same reasons that you do. For example, if your primary reason is quality of education, a religious based group may not be a good fit for you. Chances are there is a or Google group of homeschoolers near you that would be a good fit. Guest guest
I started researching homeschooling when my oldest was 1 year old too and felt so overwhelmed at the time. The most helpful resource that I found on homeschooling is the Home School Legal Defense Association's website. The link is www.hslda.org. Also, it has been so helpful to be a member of this association. HSLDA is also located in VA!
Guest guest
Samathia, Hi there. Good for you for getting a head start and researching home school early! I would start with these two great home school sites: http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/ and http://www.homeschooldiner.com/ The more research you do now, the more prepared you will feel. There are so many different styles of homeschooling, read about them and see how you can use them to fit your beliefs, your child's learning style and your teaching style. Also join a home school . There is a lot of wisdom and experience in this group in particular: secular_homeschoolers Also google your state's homeschool laws and be well informed with these laws. Good luck in your search, Lisa Imagination is more important than knowledge... Guest guest
Hi, My best friend homeschools her daughter, and this year they started a homeschool co-op (a one day enrichment day where they all pool their strengths together and do things that are more fun in a group setting or something that you might not do like some pretty awesome science labs and writers workshops). I know the main thing that she did was that she joined 2 different support groups when she started, one that was religious based and one that was not. She's since found her own style, but really there are a bunch of ways to do it. The main thing that you need to do is to comply with your state's laws regarding homeschooling (I think she said we were lucky because Illinois really only mandates so many days of school a year, but some require you keep detailed records and so on, but it varies by state). The rest is finding what works for your family, and joining some of your local groups will help you figure out what kind of curriculum is right for you (My friend was in both a secular and a religious group, she picked what she wanted to gain from their meetings, and left anything else she didn't agree with alone). Oh, I don't know if it's everywhere, but there is also this K-12 online education, it's sort of more directed homeschooling, they supply the curriculum, and you track or do the lessons online, I think. There is also the series of The Well Trained Mind which is more of a classical education - www.welltrainedmind.com and I know she followed that for a while, but now it's so much of a blend of different things - It's pretty neat. My friend's daughter is also part of a girlscouts troop that is all homeschooled girls, they're an amazing bunch of girls, too. They just did a coat drive last week for the homeless with the Chicago Bears, which was pretty cool. And she takes violin lessons one day a week. Good luck, it is a lot to digest, but there are resources out there, and different kinds of local HS groups -they should be able to help you through it, as they all went through it before, no matter what the style. Take care, Missie On Sun, Nov 23, 2008 at 7:11 PM, samathiathewriter <samathiathewriter wrote: > I am interested in home schooling my son. Guest guest
I have been homeschooling my 10 year old for 2 years now and I just started homeschooling my almost 3 year old the basics. You have so many choices of how you can do it. My suggestion is to look in to the laws in your current state. I personally chose the k12 program for my daughter. www.k12.com , and that is a program that is completely free because we agree to do the end of the year state testing. We are provided a resource teacher that we can call anytime for help. I have only had to call her 2 times, once for geometry and the second for Algebra. We meet with her every 2 months to assess any questions we have. Many people choose to un-school as they call it and wing it. You can buy your own resources and asses your child's progress on your own. That is what I am currently doing for my preschooler. It was one of the hardest decisions that I ever made and I researched it for over a year before we made our ultimate decision. I was scared at first about weather it was the right decision. But I can say now without at doubt this was the best decision that I have made regarding what is best for my children. It does take A LOT of effort on your part, not only to commit to teach your child. But to also keep them actively social. We are into scouts and Jazz. We are involved in homeschooling playgroups and it is fantastic. Also check out cafe mom at www.cafemom.com and join one of their many homeschooling groups. They always have fantastic advice and you know everyone there is in the same boat as you. One of the groups is a homeschooling preschool group and that would probably be a good one for you. Good luck with your ultimate decision.
