Guest guest
This year I have gone totally nuts feeding the wildlife around my house. My main focus has been the resident bluebirds, but I now have squirrel feeders and assorted seeds for seed eaters. The standard winter food for birds is suet, which is made from rendered beef fat= LARD. Since I have a huge population of birds eating here now, I decided to make my own suet. A little quick research indicated that vegetable shortening is just as acceptable as lard. I'm 5 batches in to my new feeding plan, and the birds are gorging on vegetarian suet, even the insectivorous birds! Recipe from Birds & Blooms magazine, with adjustments: 1 cup crisco or other vegetable shortening 1 c crunchy peanut butter 1 c whole wheat flour, cream of wheat, or oatmeal 2 c cornmeal Optional: raisins cut in bits, other dried fruit, shelled sunflower seeds, etc Melt shortening and peanut butter. Add other ingredients and mix well. Spread in pan, freeze, and cut into squares. Happy birding! Ann
