Guest guest
The NY Coalition for Healthy School Food emphasizes plant-based foods for schools, and has posted their recommendations. They claim that " schools that have made comprehensive changes similar to our suggestions have found major benefits, including: 1. Better attendance (less sickness) 2. Better grades (children can focus and concentrate better and are absent less) 3. Less disciplinary problems. This is a major problem for many schools, and a change similar to what we are suggesting was implemented in Appleton, Wisconsin Schools. To obtain a 14 minute DVD ($10 cost) go to: http://www.naturalovens.com/Shop/Bookstore/DVD_Appleton_Alternative_High_School/\ index.html While these aren't always suitable for lunchbox lunches, they should be promoted at your school cafeterias. As the parent of a kindergartener, I'm not too sure how to best do that, so if anyone has suggestions... Here are their guidelines for healthy school lunches: http://www.healthylunches.org/guide.htm And their recipes, from " Food is Elementary " : http://www.healthylunches.org/foodre.htm Here is the nutrient analysis and the cost of each menu item: http://www.healthylunches.org/nutrient.htm The USDA-subsidized commodity ingredients in these foods makes them quite inexpensive, in addition to being tasty, healthy, and having a small environmental footprint.
