Guest guest
I have just read your message asking about what to feed to your 16 month old baby. There is a wonderful book I recommend called The Ayurvedic Encyclopedia by Swami Sada Shiva Tirtha. This book has much informative information on what to feed your baby as well as the rest of your family. I truely do enjoy this book very much and I refer to it often concerning health and food. I wish the best for you and your family! ________________________________ klesser60089 <klesser Sunday, December 21, 2008 6:00:04 PM Newbie Questions - help needed Hi everyone, I really need some help here with table foods Background. I am on the McDougall plan ( 12 days) and am happy with that for life. I am trying to keep my baby on a vegan meal plan with plenty of natural fats ( avacado, nut butters...) HOWEVER: he is on a milk based ( lactose free formula watered down) he drinks 4 - 8oz sippy cups a day. It is a long story but to make it short this was the one formula he tolerated as a baby. my husband gave him 8oz of silk soy milk a few months ago and he threw up like 4 times. I think he might be allergic and I'm afraid to try it again. My child is almost 16mths old. He is a bit behind though in most everything by a couple of months but he is fine. I still have him on stage 3 foods with the edition of the super baby porridge ( beans and brown rice) I don't really measure how much I'm giving him at one meal but it is about half a jar of one type ( like sweet potatoes) and mixed with an equal amount of the super baby porridge and half a jar of a fruit. Then of course his formula I have given him whole grain toast with peanut butter and that went well and I have also given him cut up bits of pasta with vegan marinara sauce and that went well. He likes steamed carrots but not steamed potatoes or broccoli but I'm going to keep trying He likes oatmeal. The only other thing that I can think of that I want to give him is pita with a hummus and add tahini to it. other then that I am lost on what to feed this baby. I want to get him off his formula too but I don't know what to give him. I make my own soymilk from beans at home but it doesn't have the " extra's " added in. I am afraid to give him any soy and I'm not sure I want to give him fake meats until he is older. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Guest guest
I had heard of a family that shops at our local co-op, their little girl has many health issues. She is severly alergic to most types of nut milk as well as cows milk. They fed her coconut milk insted of formula and continue to give her coconut milk instead of other milks. I am not sure if this would work for everyone, and it maybe a little costly but it seems like a viable option if you are trying to keep your son on a vegan diet. > > > > ________________________________ > klesser60089 <klesser > > Sunday, December 21, 2008 6:00:04 PM > Newbie Questions - help needed > > > Hi everyone, I really need some help here with table foods > > Background. > I am on the McDougall plan ( 12 days) and am happy with that for life. > I am trying to keep my baby on a vegan meal plan with plenty of > natural fats ( avacado, nut butters...) > > HOWEVER: he is on a milk based ( lactose free formula watered down) > he drinks 4 - 8oz sippy cups a day. Guest guest
A child must be exposed to something more than once to have an allergy to it. I would recommend trying soy milk again in the future or introducing him to enriched rice milk. Guest guest
I understand your trouble. I have a 14 month old and am having trouble keeping up my breast milk supply to meet her demand. (she doesn't nurse anymore, I have to pump.) Although I didn't want to, I started looking into toddler formulas and nutritional needs at this age. Bottom line seems to be this... kids need calcium, vit. D, protein, etc. After age 1, those nutrients don't need to come from formula or breast milk. Just make sure they get it in their diet through the foods they eat. If you are intent on using a milk-type product, try fortified hemp, oat, or almond (unsweetend if possible). As far as foods are concerned, I make my daughter a lot of casseroles. It's easy to hide veggies in them. Try www.fatfreevegan.com for recipe ideas. The potato tempeh casserole on there went over well. " Vegan with a Vengence " also has some good recipes. The chickpea broccoli casserole was a hit with my little one. No matter what I make her, I always try to add Spectrum flax with DHA or Udo's DHA oil. They adds good fats and are a vegan source of DHA. Good luck! , " klesser60089 " <klesser wrote: > > Hi everyone, I really need some help here with table foods > > Background. Guest guest
Hemp milk, too, right? Is there a minimum age recommendation? I was completly comfortable giving my 2 yo soy milk, rice milk, and almond milk. I had heard many in this group suggest hemp milk, but I have to admit! I stayed away because I thought it was a bit too " earthy " for me (and I didnt know that the local chain, Publix, carries it). I am very please I got it, as we now drink milk more often than just cereal for breakfast) My daughter, 2.5, now asks for more milk and licks around her mouth before asking for help cleaning up. Best of luck, Cassie " life's a garden, dig it! Guest guest
Please do not read any judgement into my words - I am in a really big hurry but wanted to address this. So, I will be blunt for time's sake. This comment is erroneous. Allergies DO occur to the initial exposure of specific antigens (the " allergic " substance)in some individuals. Some examples of this are strawberries and bee stings. Reactions can occur immediately or within a few hours. These reactions may be mild or anaphylatic. Anaphylaxis can cause death. This is why doctors recommend introducing only one new food every three days when weaning your child. If you feel your child had a true reaction, please do not give this food again until you speak with someone trained with the knowledge of immune reactions. Some immune reactions can be outgrown but you should be careful and comfortable when/if reintroducing the antigen.
