Toy Poll

In our family, we have insisted our daughter not have toys that go against our

values.  While toy meat has never been an issue for us, we have always banned

toy guns; we have gone as far as insisting that neighbors bring their toy guns

home before playing at our house or in our yard.

Toy Poll

Friday, December 26, 2008, 12:56 PM

My 2 year-old daughter got a play kitchen and wooden toy food for

Christmas. The food came in sets- pizza, 4 food groups, etc. There is

a chicken leg, steak and fish included.

Would you remove those toys so she's not pretend cooking meat? There

was also a hot dog and hamburger but those we just call a veggie dog

and veggie burger. We don't eat anything that resembles the 3 items

listed above.

Just curious what other veg parents would do!

My son used to call the burgers from his kitchen - cookies. LOL.

We did remove the steak, but left the chicken leg, and called it a

tofurkey leg (or a seitan chicken leg). We didn't have a fish with

ours, though.

We do it the same as you. :) Any food item that wouldn¹t have a veggie

analog for I toss. We do pretend have ³tofu pups,² ³soy sausages² and

³veggie burgers². On our pretend pizza we have just always said that all the

items are vegetarian.

Hi!

I totally get the responses from the other veg parents.I, on the other

hand, have never banned the plastic meats. We, too, call the ones that

LOOK like analogs by their analog names. I find the 'others' to be a

good opportunity for discussion with my kids. They haven't ever seen

the other ones- except perhaps for the 'holiday' meats at grandma and

grandpa's. So we talk about how most people eat this, and the dead

animal it actually represents. So far, it's worked well. My five year

old tells the 2.5 y/o, " That's a ..., but WE don't eat it. " I like that

they KNOW what common foods are made out of even if they don't eat them

themselves- I feel like it brings them closer to the issues that

surround 'our' actual food supply. I also want them to have that

background knowledge- I'd hate it if they didn't KNOW what common foods

looked like when faced with a picture of one at school or something

(believe me, I've had a student ask me 'what's a flower pot?' before).

BTW, one of my favorite questions that has come from the plastic meat

is 'why don't they have dog and cat legs?'. Who knows- why IS one meat

socially acceptable and not another one? Of course, it's a cultural

thing, but I guess I'm getting dangerously close to the 'rat is a pig

is a dog is a boy' debate.

Good luck figuring all of this out for your family!

Wait, I remember what it was - he called the chicken leg an ice cream

cone...we left it and it stayed that way until someone else came over,

and called it by the other name (this was well after he'd been calling

it something else) and we said it was a veggie-version.

That's funny.

We throw out the things that can't be 'fake' meat.

We've never had a fish, but I'm sure if it looked like a fish my kids would try

to feed it and have it join in with the stuffed animals.

That reminded me of how my daughter loves the going on the carousel at a local

kids funland and her favorite to ride on is a big cat.  The cat happens to have

a fish in it's mouth.  She has a very elaborate story that she tells about how

that fish was taken out of the water and the cat is getting it put back in the

water.  He's such a good kitty.

She is aware that cats eat fish (she's five), but she simply won't make that

connection.  It's so fun.

Hi,

We do like others have mentioned - call them veggie dogs and veggie

burgers, and we painted our " steak " to be a pile of rice and black

beans. :-) We don't have a chicken leg or fish body . . . maybe you

could repaint the chicken leg to be something else - broccoli, summer

squash, or something else? And maybe you could use the fish as a pet

fish - just play with it as if it were a live animal not a dead one?

:-) Or, like others have mentioned, just spirit it away to the recycle

bin or trash. And on the topic of changing the function of toys - our

son uses the plastic rocks that came with a toy bulldozer my sister got

him . . . . as falafel balls in his wooden kitchen! Love that!

Have fun cooking and " eating " in your new tiny kitchen! :-) Our son

got one when he was 2 years, too, and still uses it almost every day - 2

years later. Great toy!!

yes, i removed them, if i couldn't find a substitute similiar. however, i

noticed that they make it into something they can relate to, if we've been at

someone else's house. they would never imagine it is a leg of a chicken, right?

who would naturally think that? enjoy your kitchen! My dd and ds have both

enjoyed our set. i love when we have friends over and the kitchen is one of the

first places everyone goes to.

cheers!

I love the idea of just repainting them! Thanks for all the

suggestions...the fake steak is really the one that gives me the

creeps the most-gross!
