Guest guest
I've not made these in a while, but they were very good (and they brown nicely!). You can alter the spices/ingredients a bit and they're still good (leaving out the spicy crushed red pepper, if you want or cut back on it). I have different kinds of sausage seasoning blends from Penzy's that would work well with this (breakfast sausage, Krakow Nights seasoning, bratwurst seasoning - I also add them to recipes that sometimes call for sausages etc that I've adapted from non-veg recipes and they work great! All the flavor, none of the bad icky stuffs hee). http://www.vegfamily.com/vegan-recipes/entrees/breakfast-sausage.htm There was another I googled when searching for " vegetarian black eyed pea sausage patty " that sounded good, but I have not tried: http://www.vegfamily.com/vegan-recipes/entrees/breakfast-sausage.htm Missie On Fri, Jan 2, 2009 at 3:36 PM, coylemk <coylemk wrote: > my almost 3yo girl loves morning star sausage patties and she is not eating > many other > vegetarian protein soy sources but is eating almonds, peanut butter almond > butter edame... > and absolutely loves PASTA and sometimes Pagodas > > I have 2 q's > 1. how can i make a sausage pattie that resembles morning stars flavors > which my daughter > loves? > 2. does morning star have GMO's? > I pray not but we consume the products 1-2 times a week.... > > thanks for any info you have > I should check out morning stars website as well for info about GMO's > > thanks > kate > > -- http://mszzzi.zoomshare.com http://www.flickr.com/photos/mszzzi/ ~~~~~(m-.-)m
Guest guest
Unless soy products are organic, there is no guarantee that they are non-GMO. Guest guest
I know that Morningstar had two product lines. The ones in the traditional green package was not GMO-free and that is why they were never sold at the health food markets such as Whole Foods and the local ones here in Maryland. But they did have a line in a light brown box that were GMO free and preservative-free. They tasted the same, but Would cost about a dollar more. I haven¹t checked on it lately, but if this is still the case, I would look for them in the health food stores as opposed to the regular supermarkets. Also, boca makes some that are pretty good and I also think Gimme Lean is non-GMO. But Gimme Lean has a strange texture. They are good, but Morningstar is most popular with my family as well. Good luck! Guest guest
Hi there, I made them yesterday morning and left out the mushrooms as I don't eat them. I loved them. My husband like them. My son said he liked them but only ate one (he's 18, so that means he didn't really love them because he has a huge appetite) and my daughter said they weren't " sausage like " . I also didn't add fennel or red pepper as I didn't have it. The texture on the inside is soft. not chewy. BTW, I'm the only one in the family who has ever eaten real sausage (when I was young) but we used to buy Yves breakfast links all the time and loved them. Now they seem to be gone gone gone.... Anyway, next time I plan to add finely chopped water chestnuts and maybe the fennel. Also, the recipe doesn't say what to do w/ the tomato paste. I added it to the beans. Guest guest
You can also add some gluten flour (if you are not allergic/avoiding/etc, of course) and they will be a bit more chewey. There is a recipe in Veganomicon for chickpea patties using mashed garbanzos and gluten flour + spices that you can also adapt (I have sub'd other beans and it works ok, too), using the sausag-y spices (fennel is usually what the flavor is that folks associate with it, so if it's left out, it can be a bit off, but I like them spiced in all kinds of ways). I try to experiment with different things, so for me, if I wanted them to be more chewy like the MSF type ones, I'd add gluten flour to the mix (no idea how much, just add till the texture was what I was looking for). Hope that also helps. Missie On Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 10:40 AM, Missie <mszzzi wrote: > I have made it w/out the mushrooms and it works just fine. Guest guest
I was listening to Rollye James a few nights ago ( on XM satellite radio, although I'm assuming she's on am too. She's very popular with truckers. But I digress). She was talking about how the FDA is now moving to disallow the labeling of foods as 'non-GMO'. Does anyone else know about this? She had loads of callers that said their favorite foods seem to be having label changes- ie, the non-GMO is disappearing. Lo and behold, the other day I bought our usual margarine (the Earth Balance, or whatever it is) and the HUGE non-GMO label is now gone. It still says it in very small letters on the back. Guest guest
I don't know about the non-GMO aspect but i was reading an article in VegNews mag. about a year or so ago and it had mentioned that Morning Star Farms uses eggs from factory farmed chickens. I don't know if this is still the case but i have steered clear of the company ever since. I have noticed though that they are trying to make more of their products vegan.
