Hi Tanya,

This assignment is a great way for your daughter to learn researching skills.

She would benefit from a trip to a library to learn how to use their resources.

My daughter is in the 6th grade and homeschooled. I have assigned her a

persuasive essay that she is to read to friends and family in the comming weeks.

She chose the topic of vegitarianism. I was wondering if any of you had any info

or web sites for her to do her research.

Thanks in advance

For some other info, I would also look at www.veganoutreach.org. You

might want to check it out first - but I really like that they are

less preachy and not over the top. They just present things, and sure

it's better/etc, but I just like the style. There's pamphlets to

download/print, and I know they have some info on the site as well.

For her age, maybe even Peta2 (www.peta2.com) she can sign up there,

and they will mail a little packet with some fun stickers she could

give to her friends...or you can order them (pins, too - my favorite

is the " powered by tofu " one, though I'm surprised I've not picked one

up yet myself. heh)

I like their pamphlets about it (they even have one called 'even if

you eat meat' or something to that effect - for just reducing the

amount you eat -since every step helps, and they may find that as they

cut it out they feel better/healthier...I just want to add that my

husband converted someone through this route! He has a friend that was

not only shocked to know he was a vegetarian...but because my husband

wasn't like what the general impression of 'crazy vegans/vegetarians'

are, he got this friend to try (and found out he felt much better

w/out the meat) and so he became a vegetarian. Hee.

Libraries are good, research skills are important - even coming across

the other side of the issue, and dealing with possible questions from

that POV. I guess I'm not sure what else to suggest, as it would also

depend on WHY or how she's approaching it - since there are many

different routes to the same end (environmental, animal rights,

health, food allergies...combinations)she could also touch on each, I

suppose.

I know it was hard for me when I was in high school and did mine

against animal testing, but with the library, I had come across some of

the opposition in the books so was prepared for the

alternatives/combatitive questions (better them than us for testing

stuff out on...medical advances like heart transplants etc...just more

to consider, since if dealing with family that might not be as

accepting might ask...at least it will be friends/family so she might

be comfortable with them asking, but it is something to consider, to

be prepared for the 'well why' questions that may come from her

reading it.

For some general stuff, that might be fun/educational, maybe also good

for letter writing at a later time - you can also find lists online of

famous people who are vegan/vegetarian (I'm sure a quick google will

reveal them). depends on how she will present it - even the general

'accidentally vegan' list could be worth mentioning a few things like

it's not hard because these are already vegan/vegetarian.
