Guest guest
Hi everyone! Hope your Holidays were wonderful! I had a question: Does anyone know what amount of the B vitamins (esp. B12) a 4 year old should have in her daily multi? Should I supplement with any other B complex? She does eat her greens, but not as often as I'd like her to, nor as much, & isn't the biggest fan of kombucha, where I get much of mine. Thanks in advance for any help. Guest guest
Kimberly, My kids are 2 and 3, we're all vegans, and all four of us take a liquid sublingual B-12 every day. I don't worry about how much they need as children - I just give them the full amount for an adult, which is a dropperful. It comes out to approximately 13,000% of the daily value, but only about 1% of B-12 supplements are absorbed, so a dropper is about 130% of the RDA for an adult. There is no concern for a child getting too much B-12, as long as they get a good amount of the other B's - a good ratio between B vitamins is important. I would not depend on kombucha, home-brewed or store-bought, for B vitamins, and especially not for B-12. The amount can vary widely depending on a number of factors. In our family we consume lots of whole grains, nutritional yeast, legumes, molasses, and other dependable sources of B vitamins, but we don't mess around with B-12. I won't indulge in a lot of speculation about fermented foods or algae or seaweed, most of which contain analogues of B-12 that can actually block absorption of real B-12. We just take a supplement and feel grateful for it. B-12 is too important for whole-body function to be cavalier with its intake. Guest guest
I think 2-4 yr olds need about 3 mcg a day. It looks like over 4 they need about 6 mcg according to my Veglife multivitamin for kids. We give our daughter her daily multivitamin plus we've had a lot of luck with the B12 spray. We like the one made by Pure Vegan. They sell it at the natural foods store in town. It has 500 mcg per spray. We use it for us too. I double checked with our pediatrician to make sure it was safe for kids and he said it was. My understanding is that you can't overdose on B12 (if anyone knows differently please let me know). It's also my understanding that the body only absorbs 10% of the B12 you supplement with, so you want to give them more than the minimum required. Again, if folks have a different understanding of those numbers I'd love to keep learning. Good luck, Rachel On Jan 17, 2009, at 1:25 PM, kimberlyire wrote: > > Hi everyone! Guest guest
Everyone, I'm new to this message board system, but am in need of some advice. Where can I get these veglife multivitamins? Are they in liquid or tablet form? My 8 yr old would prefer it in liquid form. Also, I'm curious what others think of protein supplement shakes. I make sure she gets enough through her diet, but the shakes make me feel like I know without certainty she achieved her dietary requirements and then some. Not being a vegetarian myself, I'm trying to sort this all out while making sure she's healthy. Guest guest
They sell the Veglife Vegan Kids multivitamin at our local natural food store. Ours are a chewable tablet. The web site on the bottle is www.nutraceutical.com and their number is 1-800-veg-0250. Guest guest
Hi Melissa and welcome, Most American actually eat way more protein than is necessary for a healthy diet. The key (for vegetarians and non vegetarians) to a healthy diet is to eat lots of whole grains and a rainbow of fruits and veggies every day. If you are really concerned, you may want to consult with a nutritionist, but try to find one who is either vegetarian or who has worked with vegetarians (this may even be convered by your insurance). Another source of stress for you may be making different meals for different family members. There is so much wonderful food, without meat, that your whole family can enjoy. You can check the archives of this group, other vegetarian groups, or let us know what your family likes to eat and we will be happy to send you our thoughts.
