My kids drink:

 

100 percent juice (watered down)

soy milk

chocolate soy milk

water

fresh brewed iced tea (hardly no sugar in it)

hot tea (green tea especially)

 

We try to encourage them to drink a lot of water. We went to the Kleen

Kantene Web site and let them pick out their own color of water bottle.

That has helped to get them interested. They do drink water quite a bit

using those.

Have you looked at Wateroos? They come in drink boxes like juice, but

it's water, and has natural flavors, but NO sugar (or any sweetner for

that mater). Google it, and you can check it out and see if you can

get it. There's a little vitamin shoppe and small grocery by us that

carries it (they also have plain water, with cute penguins on the

container). If you're sure they won't drink water by itself.

 

There's also Honest Kids - they have lemonade, and 2 others I can't

recall what flavors are -maybe grape and mango. They're like sort of

watered down juice (half the sugar/calories) though you could do the

same thing with your juices - put them into a nice pitcher and add

extra water. I like to dilute my son's juice, because I think it's too

sugary (I've seen Mott's Tots juice - it's also diluted 50% w/water

that we have picked up on occasion).

 

This is our summer strategy for getting our son to drink enough - he

likes just plain water (he likes it room temp, not cold from the

fridge, but will drink ice water if we are out -mostly to have the ice

I think LOL)

 

You can also have a pitcher of water and you can add (if they can have

it - I know a little bit about it, but don't recall about citrus) a

slice of lemon, or lime, even orange. And this sounds odd, but it's

yummy in summer : a cucumber slice.

You can do different mints (again, I don't know if you can have it) or

Lemon Verbina, or other refreshing herbs (you can crush them into the

bottom of the pitcher to release the oils).

 

(Sorry again w/ the citrus here, if you can't do it) but we make our

own lemonade from lemon juice and sugar. You can adjust it, to taste,

add mint or even try other juices to dilute/sweeten naturally (maybe

use agave nectar instead of sugar - we do this in summer as well). I

think it's 1c. lemon juice (or lime). 1/2 c sugar and then just about

1qt water more. We have made pommegranate lemonade, and mint lemonade.

 

We also do roasted barley tea (we get it from the Japanese mall) I

usually just keep a gallon in the fridge in summer -not sweetened,

and I don't think it needs it at all. Wheatgrass is a little sweet

tasting, too - so you can also do 'iced' (or keep in fridge)

wheatstraw tea. You can do other herbal teas (there's some that are

like fruit punch and you can sweeten a little if needed, and then

reduce sugar as they get used to it, or use agave nectar if you can ,

or stevia if you like it- it can taste funky, I've noticed if I use

too much). We usually have a variety of this as well.

I was thinking the citrus in the water, too.  Also, a handful of raspberries in

the bottom of a pitcher might make a nice flavor. 

My husband loves to use foods/juice as rewards or bargaining tools (Which I

HATE!!!) but I always make sure he uses a splash of juice in a cup of water.

Also just a tiny bit of fruit juice will nicely sweeten and flavor teas. Try

orange, apple, pom etc.

My kids' primary drink is water. Sometimes they have fruity teas with

stevia for a nice treat, but I personally think juice is the devil so they

rarely have it. For a really special treat, I make smoothies for dinner

pretty often. They also love their Sigg/Kleen Kanteen bottles and will

happily drink water from those. I really think water is one of the most

important nutrients that most of us are deficient in, so I've really

impressed on that. My kids don't really drink soymilk or anything like

that, though they do like it in a smoothie. I also occasionally give them

one of those new juice shots from GoodBelly if they're feeling under the

weather. The sugar is reasonably minimal - though it would be better if

there were none - and they have probiotics and vitamins.

We drink a lot of water.  My daughter will have a cup of warm soymilk first

thing in the morning and sometime a glass of lemonade (water with a dash of

lemon juice and a pinch of organic sugar or a drop of agave nectar) with her

afterschool snack; other than than, she drinks water all day, she has a

waterbottle in her backpack and one on her nightstand.

 

My sister loves the celestial seasonings berry chill in her water; it is

caffeine free and sweetened with stevia.

If it's the added sugar in fruit juice you're concerned about,

Knudsen's juices are really safe. Most of their juices are just fruit

without any added sugar. There is the natural sugar from the fruit

but, if you're okay with that than they are a good alternative.

Thanks for all the suggestions for juice alternatives. I think the Whole

Foods near us carries Wateroos. Citrus doesn't seem to bother anyone here

We are really big on fruit waters. My son picks out the fruit

and then he gets to help me cut them up- we do oranges, lemon, raspberries,

strawberries etc. sometimes we add cucumber or herbs like mint, spearmint

etc. We just take cold water, add the cut up items, he picks the combos and

chill in the fridge.. we drink after an hour and enjoy all day long.

 

 

 

My son's favorite is actually lemon and cucumber.

Start watering down the juice gradually, maybe 20% water.  Increase by 10-20%

every couple of days.

 

It is so important for overal health to drink plenty of water.

my sister-in-law actually discovered that our grocery store carries " true

lime " " true orange " and " true lemon " crystal packets. They are pure,

crystallized juices from the fruits, and have no added sugar or anything

like that. While I would like to be able to afford lemons and limes and

oranges to put in my water every day, we are on a tight budget- but these

things do the trick! I usually add 2-3 packets to my liter bottle of water,

and it gives it just enough flavor. Of course, you could add more, or add

agave or sugar to sweeten if you wanted.
