Guest guest
Our vegan family of 6 recently got a puppy. We visited a holistic veterinanrian this week. She says the way to keep him healthist is to have him on a raw meat diet. This totally grosses us out. I understand that dogs are closer to carnivores then humans but we had hoped to switch him to vegan dog food once he was a year old. Any advice out there? Any vegan vets to recommend in the MD area? Guest guest
We have two dogs, that have been on vegan diets since we got them 6-7 years ago (alththough I can't vouch for what they scavange from the back yard!). We give them mostly the Nature's Recipe Healthy Skin formula which says vegetarian on the label and is actually vegan. They make both dry and wet food. Since they sell it at our local Petsmart, it's the most convenient brand for us, but there are other brands out there. For dog treats, The New Skete Monestary near where we live in upstate NY makes vegan dog biscuits that our dogs like and that we get at our local health food store. Guest guest
Hi, We've used VegePet products (www.vegepet.com <http://www.vegepet.com/> ) for 19+ years for our cats -- and dogs are even easier to feed vegetarian/vegan in that they can easily get the nutrients they need from a human vegetarian/vegan diet. (Cats need an amino acid that is available in animal flesh or kelp -- VegeCat supplements derive it from kelp.) James Peden, the owner, is wonderful and will answer any questions you have with such care and genuine concern for animals. I know there's a huge debate about raw meat vs. veggie diets for pets - but we are just not willing to have raw animal flesh in our home, and most importantly - the Vegepet supplements have improved many of the normal cat health problems our cats have come up with. Our vets have even been surprised that the VegeCat diet has better results than their prescription foods they sell. Good luck! Guest guest
I am happy to see some discussion on raising a vegetarian dog. We just got a little Yorkie a cou0ple of months ago and I am interested in raising him vegetarian as well.
