Received the following message today. Does anyone know if this is really

true?

The small cocktail (baby) carrots you buy in small plastic bags are made

using the larger crooked or deformed carrots which are put through a

machine which cuts

and shapes them into cocktail carrots - most people probably know this

already.

What you may not know and should know is the following:

Once the carrots are cut and shaped into cocktail carrots they are dipped

in a solution of water and chlorine in order to preserve them (this is

the same chlorine used in your pool).

Since they do not have their skin or natural protective covering, they

give them a higher dose of chlorine.

You will notice that once you keep these carrots in your refrigerator for a

few days, a white covering will form on the carrots. This is the chlorine

which resurfaces.

Â

At what cost do we put our health at risk to have esthetically pleasing

vegetables?

Chlorine is a very well-known carcinogen, which causes Cancer.

Oh boy. I went through this with my in-laws a few months ago. This is, in fact,

an email urban legend that's been going around for several years. There IS an

element of truth to it; baby carrots, as with all pre-packaged, ready-to-eat

vegetables, can be treated with a very weak solution of chlorine and water. It

IS immediately rinsed, however. That 'white film' that forms on them will form

on any carrot that has been cut, regardless of refrigeration etc.

I could not, while researching this, find if the above is true of organic

cocktail carrots. I'm hoping it's not. But, it was interesting to find out that

any prepackaged vegetable can be treated in this way- who knows how many of them

are (I couldn't find info on this, either), and you'd probably have to contact

the individual farms to find out.

I got this a few months ago and so I called the 800 number on the back of my

package of baby ORGANIC carrots.

The customer service rep told me that indeed they were rinsed with a diluted

chlorine rinse that off-gassed before it was packed.

She said the levels were in accordance with the EPA safe drinking water act (oh,

joy),

AND that the rinse was used on ALL carrots, not just the mini ones.

Guess it's time to add carrots to our list of things to grow for ourselves this

year! Thanks for the info on the organic carrots. I'm not sure I consider a

diluted chlorine rinse in compliance with 'organic' ideals. Perhaps it follows

the letter of the law, but certainly not the spirit.

This is really another reason to buy organic, unprocessed produce.

Wow! I can't believe that this is allowed on organics!!  Chlorine is an

environmental toxin.  I guess that this is what happens when agribusiness takes

I have to say that I am jealous of you California folks.  We went to farmers

market in Laguna Beach with amazing produce.  We spent the rest of the day

snacking on sweet, skinny asparagus, and dragged home a big bag of blood

oranges, avocados and sweet onions.  We only had carryons, so we would up with

oranges in our jacket pockets.

Robin in Chicago, where the sun is shining and my daffodils are all 4 inches

tall!.

The water coming out of your tap in the house contains chlorine as that is

what has been used for decades to kill bacteria in the water supply before

it gets to your house. However some Californian cities use ozone now instead

of chlorine. So if you don't live in California and you don't filter your

water prior to drinking or using for cooking, you are consuming a 'healthy'

dose of chlorine every day even if you don't eat baby carrots.

Apparently it's an FDA requirement on ALL carrots (regardless of the company or

if they are labeled organic)

to wash away any possible bacteria, like e. coli.

They did claim that no chlorine was left on the carrots....(not sure how this is

possible as it absorbs into the carrot, right?)

I think the only way around it is to grow your own, or buy local farmers food

products.

The organic carrot package I was referring to is ultimately owned by the Kroger

company.

Hope this is helpful,

June
