Guest guest
Hi Robin, We are lucky here in CA, we know. I was e-mailing with our CSA staff the other day and they were telling me that the first strawberries are ready – we got them that week in our box. I suggested we not let our excitement overwhelm us and not send pics of the berries to friends in snow-bound areas. :-) I’d love to know what folks are getting in CSA boxes around the world right now – it’s interesting to me to know what’s growing and harvesting in different areas. So, anyone want to share what you’re getting in your CSA box this week? We’re picking up today, and it might vary a bit from this, but as of a couple days ago, here’s what they expected to put in the box: Arugula, Apples, Beets, Bok Choy, Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrots, Celery, Onions (green/purple), Oranges, Potatoes, Radishes, and Strawberries. All I know is that we finished up the left-over homemade veggie soup last night for a good reason – much of this sounds like a nice soup to me! :-) Have a great day, Lorraine On Behalf Of robin koloms Tuesday, February 24, 2009 1:25 PM Re: Baby Carrots I have to say that I am jealous of you California folks. We went to farmers market in Laguna Beach with amazing produce. We spent the rest of the day snacking on sweet, skinny asparagus, and dragged home a big bag of blood oranges, avocados and sweet onions. We only had carryons, so we would up with oranges in our jacket pockets. I can't believe that this is allowed on organics!! Chlorine is an environmental toxin. I guess that this is what happens when agribusiness takes over organic farms. --- On Tue, 2/24/09, June Waterman <june (AT) sopris (DOT) net> wrote: June Waterman <june (AT) sopris (DOT) net> Re: Baby Carrots @gro ups.com Tuesday, February 24, 2009, 9:25 AM I got this a few months ago and so I called the 800 number on the back of my package of baby ORGANIC carrots. The customer service rep told me that indeed they were rinsed with a diluted chlorine rinse that off-gassed before it was packed. She said the levels were in accordance with the EPA safe drinking water act (oh, joy), AND that the rinse was used on ALL carrots, not just the mini ones. Hmmmmmm - admartin5@embarqmai l.com @gro ups.com Tuesday, February 24, 2009 5:56 AM Baby Carrots Received the following message today. Does anyone know if this is really true? The small cocktail (baby) carrots you buy in small plastic bags are made using the larger crooked or deformed carrots which are put through a machine which cuts and shapes them into cocktail carrots - most people probably know this already. What you may not know and should know is the following: Once the carrots are cut and shaped into cocktail carrots they are dipped in a solution of water and chlorine in order to preserve them (this is the same chlorine used in your pool). Since they do not have their skin or natural protective covering, they give them a higher dose of chlorine. You will notice that once you keep these carrots in your refrigerator for a few days, a white covering will form on the carrots. This is the chlorine which resurfaces.  At what cost do we put our health at risk to have esthetically pleasing vegetables? Chlorine is a very well-known carcinogen, which causes Cancer. ------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- - mail2web LIVE - Free email based on Microsoft® Exchange technology - http://link. mail2web. com/LIVE
