Guest guest
Anybody have any recipe recommendations for steel cut oats?? My husband bought some, and I cooked it the same as rolled oats, but nobody will eat it but me. (Too chewy for the toddler...)
Guest guest
I hadn't tried them, but when I went to visit my friend last week, she had them and we had them every day for breakfast. You need to cook them for 30 minutes. I'm not sure of the water ratio. You can soak them overnight to make for quicker cooking and they may be softer that way. We really enjoyed them with berries, granola and a bit of soy milk/ almond milk. Tracy On Feb 27, 2009, at 12:15 PM, sazra73 wrote: > Anybody have any recipe recommendations for steel cut oats?? Guest guest
I think they might take more water, and definitely have a longer cooking time. I think there's a crockpot recipe for them too, but I've not done it that way (I may just have to dig it out though) We prefer them over the rolled oats because they have a better flavor and texture). I like to add raisins or dried cranberries, maybe cinnamon and a pinch of cardamom to them and some maple syrup. Making them with soymilk (or ricemilk or whatever milk instead of water ) is also yummy. To add more protein, I sometimes mash up garbanzos and mix them into the oatmeal. Very filling, and adds to the kind of 'nutty' taste. We've also added tahini or peanut butter (though my son said he now doesn't like the peanut butter in the oatmeal, but he used to LOL). Guest guest
I cook mine in my rice cooker. Same measurements as on the can/pkg. I also throw in a handful of raisins, dried cranberries or other dried fruits and nuts. I have been known to use diluted apple juice instead of plain water. Yummy, filling, healthy breakfast and the rice maker takes the guess-work out of the timing.

Guest guest
Steel cut oats are less processed. Whole oats are steamed and pressed or flattened. Usually the less processed the better for you. Like whole oats are better than quick cooking are better than instant. They usually have them in regular grocery stores, sometimes in the foreign food section. I have seen them with the scottish items before. Sometimes just by the hot cereals.
