Guest guest
I was so excited to find someone who thinks just like I do regarding vegan gardening. I had the very same questions that you had. Your comments about vermicomposting concern me because I just ordered a worm factory! Have others had more positive experiences with using vermicompost? I hope so! Guest guest
I have several concerns with vermicompost, the first being why didn't it work as promised. I can only surmise that I didn't use enough of it. I thought I had. Supposedly you can use all vermicompost and nothing else. Since it isn't supposed to burn the plants, I will use more of it next time. And I'll make a vermicompost tea and see how that works. I will continue to use yard compost and long term ammendments like rock phosphate as needed. The ethical problems I have with worm factories are similar to those statements that fish don't feel. It has long been proven that fish do feel pain but people cling to the idea that they don't. Worms don't stay put - they migrate, albeit very slowly but certain species are moving into areas where they have never been. I have heard vegans say that vermicomposting is okay because the worms are happy just living and doing their job with all the food they could eat. But the worms will leave the bins if given a chance, especially if there is no food. That is why I built a bottomless bin and buried it in the ground. My worms can leave if they wish through the bottom or the above ground air holes on the side. I will use the side to side method as opposed to the vertical method to collect the castings. And, I will be very careful to separate the castings (manure) from the egg cases. I don't mind the worms hatching in the garden but I don't want them hatching in a container with no air or food. It certainly is easier to buy organic food but I want as much of my food to be as cruelty free as possible. And, I want my child to know where food comes from. (I know that it won't be 100%. I do get that just by walking to the garden and pulling a plant from the ground that I could be killing tiny insects, etc.) Let us know what your results are using the vermicompost. I was really counting on it for short term nutrients. Carrol , <admartin5 wrote: > > I was so excited to find someone who thinks just like I do regarding vegan gardening.
