Simple living group?

Hi folks -- our family has been trying to simply life for some time but

would like to connect with a wider group of families trying to do similar

things, which are generally the opposite of what others we meet are aiming

for in their lives. Ideally I'd like to find a group about simple living but

hopefully not with a focus on farming your own animals and Weston A

Price-types. I checked and got over 3,000 groups returned -- so

was wondering if anyone on here could recommend one, since I figured there

are likely more than a few of you out there who are trying to raise kids

while living more simply than your neighbours!

I would love to find such a group, too. I'm about ready to sell my house,

sell my car and move to the woods to tend my own garden and say to hell with

the world. If you find anything, let me know.

Here are some food related for simple or sustainable living that do

not push WAP.

healthycheapcooking/

The list owner is a vegetarian for health reasons. She does not allow discussion

of WAP although meat based recipes are shared. The member's share food recipes

and storage techniques (canning, dehydrating, freezing) that do not involve

packaged items. For instance, a pasta recipe should include instructions for a

sauce and not say " use your favorite brand of sauce. " She and several other

members have gluten intolerance or other food issues so there is usually a

variety of recipes. Her goal is to keep the recipes inexpensive and easy to

make. She will ban anyone trying to force a discussion of WAP.

sharonfoodstorage/

This site is for anything related to food storage. It is not a veg site but I

have belonged for a while and have not seen anyone pushing a WAP agenda. Current

topics have included canning, dehydrating, gardening, fermentation, winter

storage of food, wine making, purchasing bulk foods, water storage and more.

Yeah, I've heard of it, but I wasn't being serious. I'd be happy with a

cottage by the sea in Nova Scotia.

Hi, Heather -

I did a study course with the Northwest Earth Institute and a group of

friends. They send you the reading materials - I think it cost something

like $20.00 a person, well worth it - for a bunch of readings relevant to

simple living and sample discussion points. The issue is that you'd need to

get a group together. It is something you can do some simple flyers for and

post in local cafés and natural foods stores. With our group, I believe

there were six or so of us, which was a good size, big enough for great

discussions but not too big. The readings were thought-provoking and very

good.

Good luck, Heather, in finding what you are looking for!

Sorry, WAP stands for Weston A. Price. WAPers stand for those that push the

Price agenda. There have been several threads on WAP and you could do a search

on the group's messages if you need more info.

Sorry about the abbreviatioin.

Thanks to all of you for the simple living comments and resources. I also

found a really great book at our library called " Living Simply with

Children " that has lots of great ideas. I guess I'm just hoping for a

" community " kind of like this one, where there is support and the feeling

that I'm not the lone crazy person trying to go against the grain! Heather

Hi Heather,

If this is something that you are passionate about, then start your own.  It

takes less than five minutes to start a . People will find you and

the community will build.

Seriously, let's start our own! It could be veg-focused, but with

discussion about growing food, storing food, local economies, small houses,

car-free living, homemade medicine, just general voluntary simplicity

stuff. I'd be happy to co-moderate with someone...I'm WAY into this stuff

and also feel put off by the WAPF focus in most simplicity groups. Let's do

it!!!

Heather,

That book you mentioned is part of the recommended reading with the

Northwest Earth Institute's simple living with families course. It's a great

book with lots of ideas for discussion. I do recommend trying to start a

group in your community.

I'll do it! I'll do it! I can't take the initiative because I'm already

moderating various groups, but I'm happy to join. In terms of Heather's

original message, though, I do recommend trying to get a physical group

together so you can share one-on-one. Magical things happen that way.

I don't know that I could co-moderate as I work full time and a single

parent of three kids. I am interested though.
