Guest guest
I am a healthy vegan who adds unsweetened soy milk to my warm drinks (mostly 1/4 ratio coffee) and eats tofu 1-3 times a week, in addition to beans, rice, and lesser valued carbs(pasta/pizza). I have just had my first bone scan since entering menopause and have osteopenia...bones demineralizing faster than mineralizing. I plan to up exercise, take calcium 2x's daily (rather than 1/2 the recommended dose) ensure my leafy greens... Has anyone heard/found value in controversy that tofu/soy adds to this progression toward osteoporosis? Thank you! Alison
Guest guest
From what I've read it is cow milk that adds to it (with the increase in dairy consumption, osteoporosis has gotten higher in the US rather than lowered as they seem to try to indicate from what I've read), not soy. Soy is supposed to help, though maybe switching to the tofu that has higher calcium levels might work. There is a lot of controversy over dairy vs soy. My son has a milk protein allergy, so we have to make sure he's getting enough from other things he eats. Maybe also try adding quinoa since it's not only a complete protein, but has more calcium per cup than milks of any kind. Vitamin D also helps with the body absorbing calcium, so make sure you're getting enough of that with the calcium sources you are eating. My mom had some issues with having osteoporosis in a few of her vertabrae (I don't know if this is related to what you have) and it turned out that she had a problem with her parathyroid (not her thyroid). She had to have 2 of them removed (there are 4 of them, they're near the thyroid). She had other signs that lead to this diagnosis (tiredness, head fog, very high calcium levels in her blood, as it wasn't being absorbed, or maybe was being leached out - I forget exactly why). You might want to talk to your doctors about that too, to rule it out, or maybe consider it? Guest guest
Here is a great article from the Physicians' Committee for Responsible Medicine regarding calcium: http://www.pcrm.org/health/prevmed/strong_bones.html Robin --- On Wed, 3/18/09, Missie <mszzzi wrote: Missie <mszzzi Re: Osteopenia Wednesday, March 18, 2009, 10:56 AM From what I've read it is cow milk that adds to it (with the increase in dairy consumption, osteoporosis has gotten higher in the US rather than lowered as they seem to try to indicate from what I've read), not soy.
