Vegetarianism

Think your vegetarian-in-training might slack off on protein?

Relax. More kids than ever (1 in 200 says a new CDC survey) are saying " no

thanks " to meat. Support your budding veg-head and prep more delish, meat-free

meals with key nutrients for growing bods - even if you're not ready to go all

out animal-free - and let the planet chill too.

If 10,000 little Biters eat a PB & J for lunch instead of a ham sandwich, we'll

save 11 million gallons of water - and all before nap time.

Benefits

No worries about their choice. Kids can get all the vitamins and minerals they

need without animal protein; our resources tell you where.

(Couch) potatoes are better for them. Veggie diets generally boast higher levels

of fiber, magnesium, potassium, folate, and antioxidants than meat-based ones.

Less crashing with colds and flu. Studies show that vegetarians have stronger

immune systems than carnivores.

Mellowing out on Mama Earth. Livestock production creates more greenhouse gas

emissions than cars do, and meat uses 10 to 100 times more water to produce than

grain and vegetables.

MyPyramid.gov - the USDA's superthorough and easily scannable list of veggie

sources for important nutrients found in meats.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Campaign - clear, to-the-point website with stats and

explanations on the eco-upside of eating vegetarian even occasionally (think

flexitarian); a good primer for parents, with links to more detailed info.

VegKitchen.com - The Vegetarian Family Cookbook author Nava Atlas's recipes and

tips for raising vegetarian kids and teens.

Vegan Lunch Box - Jennifer McCann's book (and popular blog) offers recipes,

advice, and inspiration for preparing healthy vegan meals kids'll gobble up.

Check out a recipe from veg guru Nava Atlas in today's blog.

Lombard, IL, Biter Bernadette Brophy started her son, Aiden, on a vegan diet at

age 2. Now 4, Aiden gulps down superfoods like flax seed oil in his breakfast

smoothies. " I want to impress on Aidan that everyone eats different things, but

also the reasons we eat the way we do, " writes his mom.

Haha, I bought an umbrella at the tail end of a terrible storm in CA...and it

took another month or so for it to rain again. This is the way it always seems

to happen...

jenni, who's glad I had the new umbrella at a tball game...
