Guest guest
I'd like to make my daughter small vegan chocolate eggs or bunnies with a Wilton candy mold. However, I refuse to use those little chips they sell with them. I can get vegan chips from Whole Foods. Does anyone know if I can I just melt them and pour into the mold or do I need to add anything? Dawn Meisch
Guest guest
Hi- This is a question for Martha Stewart. I remember seeing her make similar molded chocolate somethings for a holiday. If I remember correctly, she added a tablespoon or so of oil of some sort. I'd go onto her website and put 'candy+molds' or something like that in her search engine, and I bet you'll have your answer. She was using store-bought chips, too. This is a GREAT idea (especially for next week during spring break. What a great project!). Please post if you find the answer! jenni ________________________________ Dawn Meisch <a_new_dawn Wednesday, April 1, 2009 9:04:14 AM making candy question I'd like to make my daughter small vegan chocolate eggs or bunnies with a Wilton candy mold. Guest guest
I'm planning on melting down a dark chocolate bar (Endangered species) and molding that. No idea if it will work though! I'll let you know if it does. Back in my high school days, I used to make peanut butter cups and I would just melt down chocolate chips and line the mold, then fill with the pb mix. They came out fine, so I don't see why vegan chips or chocolate bar wouldn't work just as well. I also got some bigger molds that I'm going to make peanut butter filled 'eggs' in and I plan to use the fudge recipe from The Joy of Vegan Baking for some of those. Don't know if that helps you or not, but that's what I'm planning! I've seen vegan bunnies and eggs, but they are EXPENSIVE!! So I thought I'd make mine own this year... Guest guest
I was thinking of doing this same thing! (as an aside...does anyone know where to buy the brightly colored foil to wrap the eggs in?? When I make my peanut butter cups, I usually add about 1/2 teaspoon of spectrum shortening to each ounce of melted chocolate, ...it helps the chocolate become smoother and easier to handle, as well it will help the chocolate to not melt immediately upon contact with a warm hand HTH! , Dawn Meisch <a_new_dawn wrote: > > I'd like to make my daughter small vegan chocolate eggs or bunnies with > a Wilton candy mold. Guest guest
Hey, Dawn - I have egg-shaped molds and am planning to make peanut butter-filled chocolate " eggs. " There is an excellent (or egg-cellent) recipe for vegan peanut butter cups here: http://bittersweetblog.wordpress.com/2007/10/26/treats-without-tricks (as well as peppermint patties) that I have made before with much success. I did the small, mini-muffin tin size, though, and I'm not sure who that will translate into a larger egg shape. I understand that there is more to chocolate candy making than just melting chocolate: there's this whole tempering process I have never really looked into. I'm sure that, while they might not be professional quality, they will taste splendid. Marla > I'd like to make my daughter small vegan chocolate eggs or bunnies with > a Wilton candy mold. Guest guest
I had a recipe for peanut butter cups that called for melted parafin to be mixed with the chocolate; this sounded too gross to me. --- On Wed, 4/1/09, jenni claire garverick <jennigarverick wrote: jenni claire garverick <jennigarverick Re: making candy question Wednesday, April 1, 2009, 10:14 AM Hi- This is a question for Martha Stewart. Guest guest
I have just used vegan chips without problem. You can add whatever flavorings you like, orange, mint, etc. You can temper the chocolate, but I have never really got that energetic. The more intricate the mold the more you need to worry about air bubbles and sticking.
