Guest guest
I'm not so sure this article is as skewed as you think it is. It states that " Adolescents practicing vegetarianism were less likely to be overweight than their omnivorous counterparts and, were the measures available, would likely have had better blood pressure and cholesterol, too, " he said. " Eating mostly plants -- and even only plants -- is good for us, and certainly far better for health than the typical American diet. " It also says that " the majority of adolescents and young adults today would benefit from improvements in dietary intake " . The problem is when people think that a vegetarian diet is a sure fire way to lose weight and just don't care about their health, but only weight loss. In other words, vegetarianism is an excuse. I can't tell you how many people have asked me if I lost weight when I became vegetarian. I explain to them that there is nothing necessarily low calorie about a vegetarian diet. It does not have cholesterol, it is usually lower in saturated fats, but it depends what you eat. Some people become vegetarian for health (or weight loss) reasons, some for animal welfare reasons. My mother in law, every time she visits, comments that she's going to lose weight while visiting because she'll be eating only vegetarian. Then she makes a big deal over how she didn't lose weight after all! Very annoying! Susan - Lebasi Wednesday, April 01, 2009 2:09 PM disapointing article. Guest guest
I agree with Susan. The headline may have been scary, but it actually said some very positive things about vegetarianism as a whole. While it may be bringing some attention to teens who are not doing following a healthy diet, it did tout the health benefits of vegetarianism. Guest guest
First of all when ever teens are including inthe numbers there is going to negative methods of obtaining weight loss no matter what lifestlye of eating philosophy is study. the is an example ofn poor research and reporting. When I first became a vegetarian and vegan it was all about animal rights and coolness. my initial veggie yrs consisted of cheese pizza, french fries, and ben and jerry's, and my veggie friends and i sat around smoking all the time. Guest guest
How many teens have healthy diets? Guest guest
I agree- the article's headline was very unfortunate, but the article on the whole was pretty positive. It DID point out that the relationship between unhealthy eating/disorders etc. was not cause/effect with vegetarianism, but the reverse- that kids turn to vegetarianism sometimes when they already have a history of food issues. Too bad many people won't make it much past the headline, and I certainly agree whoever wrote the headline itself showed bias. ________________________________ Jacqueline Bodnar <jb Thursday, April 2, 2009 8:12:53 AM RE: disapointing article. Guest guest
Haha, not many. I think my standard lunch was a bag of Cheetos and one of those trans fat-laden 'big' cookies. ________________________________ robin koloms <rkoloms Thursday, April 2, 2009 10:16:47 AM RE: disapointing article. Guest guest
Judging by the ingestion of Ben and Jerry's, pizza, french fries, etc., I think we all have our answer! I myself smoked cloves back then. They still smell delicious from afar, but I sure hope I have all the healing properties working to the right degree in my lungs. And college is another story all together! ________________________________ robin koloms <rkoloms Thursday, April 2, 2009 10:26:18 AM Re: disapointing article.
