End stray dog menace, local bodies told

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister for Local Self-Government Paloli Mohammed

Kutty has directed the heads of local self-government institutions to

take effective steps to end the stray dog menace before May.

The Minister issued the directive in the wake of the increasing menace

of stray dogs.

Recently, a three-year-old child was bitten by a stray dog that

entered her house at Iritti in Kannur.

The Minister said it was the responsibility of corporations,

municipalities and panchayats to take action against stray dogs. The

ombudsman for LSGIs as well as the High Court had ruled that local

bodies had the powers to end the threat posed to the public by stray

dogs. The secretaries of corporations and panchayats should take

special initiative to tackle the problem, he said.
