Guest guest
In the night of Feb.11, volunteers from Beijing and Tianjin rescued over 400 cats from a cat seller in Minquanmen Market in Tianjin. The cats were tranported to the shelter of China Small Animal Protection Association in Beijing. The cats were mostly stray ones. But some were pets been stolen. The seller bought them from the cat catchers and tranport them to the southern area, selling the fur and the meat. A volunteer of Tianjin " Cat Lovers Society " discovered the seller and asked the media for help. The media informed the related government departments including the police, the commercial administration and the quarantine bureau. Since there was no law on small animal protection, those government agencies had no rights to resolve this issue. But many citizens who lost their cats came to the market to look for their cats. They broke the door of the warehouse and rescued some cats. Then the police interfered and took some volunteers to the police station. The other volunteers called Ms. Lu Di, President of China Small Animal Protection Association, for help.Ms.Lu Di talked with the police on the phone. The police said there was no relative law on cat selling and they could not punish the cat seller. Through negotiation, the commercial administration persuaded the cat seller entered into an agreement with the volunteers to hand over the cats. Now all the cats were transferred to Beijing. Some died because of the weakness and the transportation. CSAPA is in short of money and people to take care of all the cats and is calling on the society to help adopt them.
