New anti-rabies vaccine for animals to be released

Hyderabad-based firm launches DNA Hepatitis-B vaccine

 

 

 

 

 

Bangalore: Hyderabad-based Human Biologicals Institute (HBI), a

subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), in

collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) here, is in

the process of developing a DNA anti-rabies vaccine for animals, which

is likely to come into the market in six months, V.K. Balasubramaniam,

Managing Director of HBI, said here on Thursday. Mr. Balasubramaniam

was speaking at the launch of the Elovac-B recombinant DNA Hepatitis-B

vaccine manufactured by HBI. He said the proposed vaccine against

rabies would be the first such vaccine in the world.

 

Usha Ganesh, Principal Secretary to the Governemnt, Department of

Health and Family Welfare, launched the Hepatitis-B vaccine at a

formal function here.

 

G. Padmanabhan, former Director of IISc, said the work on the

anti-rabies vaccine got delayed for two years because the research

team faced problems with the animal ethics committee and the genetic

engineering committee. But the vaccine would come out shortly, he

said.
