Rukmani, a hippopotamus and her baby have become overnight celebrities. Darling of the crowds, the calf stays close to his mother who is clearly very protective, guarding her baby from the big bullies. " To avoid a fight between the two hippos, they have to be kept apart, to protect the calf. It is three days now. The calf is drinking milk and is well, " said Jayachandra Kumar, supervisor. Rukmani herself was born in this zoo in 1995 and this is her fourth calf. One of them was sent off to another zoo, while two others have remained with their mother. There are now seven hippos at the zoo and authorities feel they may be pressed for space. " With the present infrastructure, we can support seven hippos, but in future, more births will create a problem, " said S Abu, Superintendent, Thiruvananthapuram Zoo. While the new addition to the hippopotamus family is welcome, it also puts a burden on the overstretched resources of the zoo. Much like the rest of the country, the zoo is also beginning to feel the pinch of population explosion.
