Meghalaya's minister in charge of urban affairs, Paul Lyngdoh, said in the Assembly recently that just " 100 dogs were registered with the Shillong Municipal Board " . The rest, he added, were " illegal " . A. Hek of the BJP said large packs of " illegal dogs " were roaming freely in his constituency, Pynthorumkhrah. Ironically, his constituency is allegedly infamous for being a safe haven for " illegal Bangladeshi " migrants. " The stray dogs in Pynthorumkhrah should be deported since they might not be from Shillong, " suggested Hek in a jocular vein. In reply, Lyngdoh said the matter would be examined with due consideration and the feasibility of their " deportation " would be looked into. Other legislators inquired about the variety — the breed and sex of the " illegal " dogs — found in the city. The House witnessed more laughter when Lyngdoh expressed helplessness when it came to the hundreds of dogs loitering at Bara Bazar. " They belong to the Syiem of Mylliem, " he lamented.
