SURAT: 'Unche aabh ma ude chhe pelo paap no patang'(There flies the kite of

sins) screams the cover page of Mukti Doot, a monthly magazine for the Jain

community in the state.

On each page reads the bold letter, " If the price of kite is Rs 5 what is the

worth of bird's life? " Joining the mission — 'say no to kite flying'— initiated

by a citybased non-government organisation, thousands of Jain families in posh

Athwalines and City Light areas accompanied by other Jains of the city have

decided not to fly kites on Uttarayan on January 14.

To save the birds, the religious heads have discussed the issue at length during

their every day discourse at different Derasars and Upashrays.

To spread the message, each building having Jain residents will have posters and

notices showing how the killer thread is taking lives of birds.

Religious heads, including Abhaydevsuri Maharaj and Chandrashekharvijayji

Maharaj, have already included the ills of Uttarayan in their religious

discourses, which take place every morning at different Derasars and Upashrays.

Chandrashekharvijayji Maharaj told TOI that Jainism is all about compassion for

living being. " A true Jain would never indulge in something which disturbs or

harms the nature.

I have been urging Jains, who come for discourse, to give up kites and save

birds, " he said. Rakesh Gandhi of NGO Prayas is hopeful of success of the

mission.

" There are about two lakh Jains in the city and even if we convince five per

cent of them, 10,000 persons will not climb up their terraces and it means

hundreds of birds would be saved.

We are trying to sensitise them about the cruelty involved in the festival. " Dr

Sanjay Shah a resident of Athwalines said, " A word from Maharajsaheb is always

taken seriously by Jains. A true Jain would give up kite flying this Uttarayan. "
