Guest guest
Link: http://www.assamtribune.com/scripts/details.asp?id=jan1307\State Tusker menace in Baska dist From Our Correspondent GORESWAR, Jan 12 – A herd of wild elephants comprising around 70 including six-seven calves have been causing havoc in several villages under the Mangaldai forest office as well as Rangiya sub- divisional forest office in Baksa district, over the last three months. The wild tuskers which came down from the foothills of the Indo- Bhutan border area in August last are now roaming in the jungles covered by the dense kohuwabon in an area of around 12 sq km on both banks of the river Puthimari. The tuskers walk over the crop fields and vegetable gardens including banana, and brinjal gardens belonging to different poor farmers. They even search for their going food from house to house. Meanwhile, the farmers have been trying to stop the menace of the tuskers but their efforts have been quite futile. They burst crackers and light fires to chase the tuskers from the tongighars as well as other guarding sheds, yet no fruitful result has been achieved. As a result, the elephants raid the villages one after another. The tuskers recently entered Lokrabarnagar and Gurmow villages and uprooted trees and destroyed a house of one Jonga Boro. A cooking shed and one big thatched house of Naren Boro of the same village were also badly damaged. A granary of one Rajani Kalita of Gurmow (Genderajhar) village in Rangiya sub-division was damaged.
