You can get in touch with the following in Chennai: 1. Animal Welfare Board of India. Ph: + 91 44 224454958, 224454330, 224454935 email: awbi http://www.awbi.org 2. Guest guest
Dear Azam, As a former member of the faculty at IIT, I am quite familiar with the campus. It is huge and we need directions as to the last known location of the deer. IIT is contiguous to the Guindy National Park and has hundreds of deer and other wildlife moving about freely. The first requirement is to know where exactly the deer is. S. Chinny Krishna AZAM SIDDIQUI [azam24x7] Tuesday, March 13, 2007 12:56 PM Dr.Chinny Krishna Cc: drdwagfood; aapn Re: THE DEER IN CHENNAI IIT CAMPUS - URGENT!!!! Isnt it sad Dr. Chinny that at this age, here we have someone voicing an SOS for a Deer in trouble and also goes on to say that it is in a 'worse condition', and hence we seem to be helpless despite the fact that Chennai is a metropolis. There must be a sound forest department with its head quarters in the city and I am sure they must be having a rescue wing as well. Wonder what they are doing and how they work ? The IIT department must also be having a fleet of guards and workers inside to ensure that all is well inside the campus. They can also be of help as far as locating that animal is concerned. An IIT is one of the most protected institutions in the country, the fact that a wild animal has intruded its territory should be a cause of concern. What if the Deer would have been a Leopard or a Tiger for that matter ? Or imagine if instead of a Deer it would have been a human intruder, would this have been the reaction from the enforcement agencies ? If a child would have been lost inside that campus and the mother insisting that it is somewhere inside the campus....you would have the entire Government Machinery engaged in the combing operation to trace out the 'human animal'. I mean these are not hypothetical examples, these things the public of India has seen in the past and has been well presented by the media today. Animals still hold the lowest priority as far as getting their voices heard is concerned and animal people unfortunately stand no better than toothless tigers when it comes to raise their voices at least in this country. It is the same in every nook and corner of India. We have the AWBi head quartered in Chennai, doesn't it form a part of their duty as well to co ordinate the rescue of that Deer ? I do not want to point at NGOs, it seems none of the NGOs in Chennai have a wildlife wing plus they must all be overburdened with some animal work or the other, but what are the 'Enforcement/ Rescue' agencies doing ??? Forest Department, Police, AWBI, Fire Service......if they all try...and then they fail, its fine. They do not want to work, fine, close shops then !! Why be there and do nothing at all ? But try at least. Such lackluster attitudes of developed urban cities is surely going to send negative signals to the other cities of India. Guest guest
I have personally rescued many wild animals and handed them over to the wildlife department within the city of Guwahati. The only thing one needs to ensure while doing so is to inform the wildlife authorities and if they take time to act, one can take the help of the local police as well. There are many others who without being animal people have time and again been bringing pythons, slow loris, deer, leopards, snakes etc which they happen to capture in their surrounding to the Zoo or wildlife authorities. Such acts are also praised by the media and press here and also the wildlife department here most of the times encourages people to bring to them wildlife which they come across. This is what we normally do back here. I do not know what equation lies with the agencies and NGOs back there in Chennai. Whatever be the reasons, its a sad reality that in one of the best metropolitan cities of India one gets to see such things happening. The more it is covered up, the more the issue gets worse. In case of the IIT-Chennai and wildlife crime issue there, a lot being written and debated in the press and the society than the 'Dog killings of Bangalore' and yet again all we do is watch helplessly. Guest guest
The Blue Cross and the Forest Department work excellently together. What I have been asking for and failing to an answer for is: " Where in IIT is the deer? " and " whom do we contact to get information about it? " . All that is required is that " Annie " contacts one of us in Chennai. S.
