To,

Markos Kyprianou, Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection,

European

Commission

Dear Sir,

This is to thank you for your recent proposal to ban

the use

of dog and cat fur in the European Union. As you say, the European

consumers

have made it clear that they do not find it acceptable to use dog and

cat

fur and your recommendation in the face of such feeling is an

appropriate

move.

All creatures have a right to live as we do and to kill them for

clothing

that has humane alternatives can only be considered an act of vanity

in an

age when we are reexamining our role with the natural world.

As you will doubtless be aware, a lot of dog and cat fur products

come from

China where animals are tortured in every way possible to obtain their

skins. They are variously beaten, strangled, hung, boiled and drowned

thus

making your proposal a beacon to all of us who believe in the

intrinsic

importance of all forms of life, all of us who believe that animals

should

be respected for what they are and not for what we can get out of

them.

We congratulate you on this bold and enlightened step and hope

that the

EU will take similar measures to tackle all other forms of animal

abuse all

over the world.

Thanking you,

Herma Caelen

Belgium
