Animal behaviour

Apropos `A sporting encounter', (DNA.Sunday, November 19) — the

organisers' support of an elephant polo game is both disingenuous and

self-serving. Hurting elephants in an event to raise money to `help'

other elephants is contradictory. PETA investigators found elephants

used in this very same game living in abysmal conditions.

Some had open wounds, presumably caused by being prodded with an

ankush. Elephants were seen being beaten violently with sticks, while

others were kept outside in the sun with little shelter or water. To

support this event under the guise of helping animals is shameful, and

corporates should realise the harm they are doing to the animals by

funding such sports. Anuradha Sawhney, PETA, Mumbai.
