Guest guest
Link: http://www.sentinelassam.com/ 6 `poachers' arrested in Orang NP, rifle, ammunition recovered Carcass of rhino calf found From our Correspondent MANGALDAI, April 17: In a significant achievement achieved in the field of conservation of Orang National Park, that too on the day of Goru Bihu (the auspicious day when cows are offered respect), a joint team of Silbari police and the Park authority arrested a gang of six suspected poachers and recovered a .303 country-made rifle along with several rounds of ammunition. Sources here have said that the joint police team, acting on a tip off, raided the house of one Nur Jamal of Hamu Char— a riverine char of the river Brahmaputra adjacent to the park on the night of April 14 and recovered the rifle along with ammunition which were buried in his court yard. Nur Jaman, his three brothers— Sheikh Jamal, Atabuddin Ali and Nurul Amin— along with Ahabuddin Ahmed and Babul Hussain of the same locality have been detained for interrogation. Though the detainees are yet to confess their involvement in poaching in the park, they confessed that the rifle and the ammunition were brought from Dimapur in Nagaland. Meanwhile, in another development, the recovery of the carcass of a two-year-old female rhino calf near the Amulya camp inside the Orang National Park recently has created concern among wildlife activists here even though the rhino population in the Park was found to be on the increase. However, Sukumar Momin, DFO (Wildlife), has ruled out the involvement of poachers in the killing of the rhino calf. He said that the of cause of the death was due to an attack of the tigers, which was evident from the claw marks of the tiger.
