Chinny Krishna (chairman, The Blue Cross of India) has a straight explanation. " Animals can live without humans, but humans can't live without animals; and as the dominant species, humans have a responsibility towards animals. " The animal welfare conference, " Asia For Animals, " basically elaborates on this idea. Recently, Chinny and Amala Akkineni (animal activist and president, Blue Cross of Hyderabad) recently announced that the Blue Cross of India would host the biennial conference along with the Animal Welfare Board of India and the C.P.R. Education Centre, in Chennai from January 10-12, 2007. The focus of `Asia for Animals 2007' will be " on consolidating experiences in the region with an eye to developing new strategies " . Topics for discussion In the main sessions, representatives from the Government and non-government sectors will hold discussions based on topics such as animals in research, zoo-check work in Asia, stray animal management, rescue centre operations, farm animal welfare, the role of Government agencies in animal protection, tackling the wildlife trade, religion and animal welfare, companion animals, captive animals, raising funds for animal welfare and media and communication strategies for NGOs. Maneka Gandhi will deliver the keynote address. Swami Dayanand Saraswathi will speak on religion and ethics, while Gen. Peter Davies, director-general, WSPA, will focus on global issues vis-à-vis animal welfare. Over 300 delegates from 30 countries will participate. Out of them, 150 will be from several Asian countries including China, Taiwan, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Singapore. There would be 50 European delegates (countries include Austria, France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom). Another 100 will be from India. Experts from Australia, Canada, the United States and Egypt are also expected to take part in the event. Vets Without Borders will conduct a pre-conference workshop on Animal Birth Control (ABC) with regard to street dogs, on January 9. Sponsored by the Brigitte Bardot Foundation, " the workshop is aimed at developing suitable protocols for a successful ABC programme " .
